Default Suspension advice -- Illuminas, Eibachs, H&R?

First off -- I DO NOT WANT COILOVERS. Been there, done that, didn't work out for a car that's mainly a daily driver.

With that said, I'm looking for some suspension advice on my '94 Del Sol. I'm going to be purchasing a set of Tokico Illumina adjustable struts, and want a set of lowering springs to go along with them. I've already narrowed my choice down to two options ..

1. Eibach Sportlines
2. H&R Race Springs

I'm looking for a spring that will give the car a low ride (the lower, the better!) and some pretty good handling characteristics. However, I don't want the car to be SO low that I have to deal with any excessive fender rubbing and whatnot.

With that in mind, which set of springs would you guys recommend -- Sportline or H&R Race? For reference, the wheels on the car now are 16" with 40 series tires.

Any pics would also be greatly appreciated!

the sportlines wont give much of a drop but it rides and feel similar to stock. the H&R race springs has a close to slammed drop and the ride is not that great but some people would say the ride is okay and you might rub a little on some tight turns with the 16'' wheels with the h&r's.

Im curious, what coilover were you riding on that didn't work out for you? Because I really would suggest that you get some Ground Control coilover because they are amazing!

I'm curious. What's wrong with coilovers?

Of what you listed I'd go with illuminas and H&R race.

From the research I did, it looked like the Sportlines should lower around 2" while the H&R Race should lower between 2.25 - 2.5" .. Is that inaccurate? Do the Sportlines drop less and the H&R Race drop more?

And I'm not too worried about occasional rubbing around a hard turn. I can deal with that. I just don't want to be rubbing with every single turn of the steering wheel.

As far as why I don't want coilovers .. Technically, this car isn't mine. It's my boyfriend's car from when he was in high school, and I've kinda taken it in since I've started driving it a lot. My boyfriend didn't treat the car very well when he used it in high school -- he put some cheap no-name coilovers on the stock struts, blew out the struts, and the car currently rides like hell on earth because he never bothered fixing the suspension. But now, we both drive it often as a DD (much better gas mileage than his IS300 and my G35 Coupe!) -- and we both want a suspension that's still low, handles well, but not quite as rough as the coilovers -- without having to drop a lot of money.

Considering we're already spending about $450 on the Illuminas, I'd like to keep the price of the springs around $200 or so.

You should be able to find H&R race springs used or possibly new for around that price.

I actually found them on Tire Rack for $195 shipped!

Does anyone happen to know the spring rates for the H&R Race? I expect them to be in the 400/350 range, but I can't seem to find a definitive answer anywhere.

Either way, their ride quality can't be worse than what it is now -- blown struts and craptastic coilovers FTL.

Ground controls are actually very good coilovers, even more so when paired with a good shock.

But back to topic, if you want to go low, the H&R race spring would be the one. I have also thought of going with these springs, over my skunk2 coilovers.

I looked around for a few minutes and cannot find anything on the spring rates, i would suprised if they were 400/350. I think your best bet would be to call H&R and ask them.

I was debating between this same springs as well, as of right now i think ima lean towards the Eibach Sportlines just cuz its a slight drop from stock and stock comfort from what ive heard and red and will be running 215/45/16! But when you decide on what you get please share your experience

I'm not used to riding in stock comfort at all -- so with that in mind, and knowing how low I want to drop the car, I'm pretty sure I'm gonna go with the H&R Race springs.

I'll definitely make sure to share my thoughts once the setup goes on. The Illumina struts are already on the way, and I'll be ordering the springs in the next day or two. Then the install, plus a new alignment and needed adjustment to the camber kits .. Two weeks, prolly.

Thanks for the help!
