usually people put 3 W6's in because of their funky ohm rating. each are in 3 or 6ohm (i think) so if you wired 3 in parallel, it will give you a total of either 1 or 2ohm. its hard to work with those odder ohm such as 3ohm total, or 1.5.
what are you looking for? W3's have more excursion capabilities than the W6. but hey...both should suit your needs.

I say go for the W6's and you should be very happy. I personally am not a fan of JL Audio myself. I say that you should just go ahead and get the w6's. Just because they are old does not mean they suck.
The original W6's were the flagship model for JL audio, and had been for at least 5 years before the W7 or the W3 came out....at that time, JL had the W1, W4, W6, and the IB4's. The W6 was the "SQ" sub and came in only one coil config....dual 6 ohm coils.
This was before the advent of cheap class D amps...much like your JBL. Power has gotten a lot cheaper with class D's....Most people during that time were running class a/b amps, and most were designed for maximum output to a 4 ohm mono load.....that way, if you wire 3 W6's you get a 4 ohm mono load....also, JL felt it was easy to get 3 10's or 12's to fit on a single baffle across a trunk. therefore a second reason for the strange coil config.
If it was me, I would do the W6's. I would take SQ over ouput any day of the week. Check the tutorials over at JLaudio.com for the wiring diagrams for those woofers.

The old W6 woofers should work...or if you want 50% more output over those
look into the W6v2...a totally reengineered sub along the lines of a W7...dual voice coil 2/8 ohms only...lot more cash output (many retailers are unloading the older versions because of the newer model that is out...grab them while you can)
