I want to do a motor swap in my 89 sedan. The two choices I have it narrowed down to are a D16Y8 and a B18b. If i go with the B18b, i will not use premium gas which will drop the power. B18b=140 horsepower minus prob. at least 10 for lack of right gas. D16Y8=127 horsepower. B18b is $250 and lots of $ for swap parts. D16Y8, I will need to find. Opinions please!

If I keep either engine stock and dont use premium, I'll end up with better gas mileage and power with the D16Y8 and you can always turbo either of them

What do u mean? Vtec is just a better setup. Good mileage, then power when u need it. What is your definition of beating on the engine? Driving/accelerating fast? If so, no duh
From personal experiences, when someone wants "vtec" its usually a kid thinking its going to make his car much faster than it will. That being said, the B18B will put down more power regardless. You wont notice vtec in the Y8 at all. When I had a B18 in my EF hatch, I was still getting 30 miles to the gallon. The reason the teg doesnt get so high in the mpg, is its weight. Much heavier than what my hatch was.

Well yes I'm 17 and I like the vtec for extra power and speed as well. And I can't believe I never thought of the weight thing for mileage haha I usually associate it with speed. What do you think you could pull of in town with the b18 in an 89 sedan (bout 2300 pounds)

It's an argument with myself right now because depending on how much I can find a d16Y8 for it might be the same or cheaper than a B18b after you buy all the aftermarket swap parts, and like i said I'm not into premium so that would probably kill my power and mileage?
also would u get better mileage with a D15b2 trans or a B16, probably D15 but a hell of a lot slower
B16 trans on the b18 will lower the mileage at highway driving due to the higher gearing. Premium gas burns cleaner than lower octane gas causing increased gas mileage. The B18 more most likely cost more in the long run to have it working in your car just because theres more youd have to buy. Personally, Id go with the b18b. It'll give you more power, but the low end torque is nice.

So actually by using premium you could make up for some of the extra cost of the premium cause you would be getting better mileage?!
Yeah, I look at this way. If I use 10 gallons of gas, and I fill it up with 10 gallons on premium gas, I'm only spending $2 more for every fill up. I've noticed that im reaching upwards to 40mpg highway and city combined.

wow! that would be awesome, too bad u can't get 40mpg highway like the d15b2 haha but that's good. Do u have any videos of your car driving? Also have you done any upgrades or is this all happening due to it being stock?
d15b does. I had an LS in my old civic hatch, driving a crx now. When I had the LS, I was getting 30 city/highway combined. That was due to me using the gsr trans (driving at 60mph I was at or around 4000RPM, that will be a gas killer)

which translates to what in a 2300 pound sedan with added b18 engine weight but a d-series trans which happen to be great on gas, aha
For the teg, a PR4 ecu, 90-93 axles, motor of course and mounts. After seeing your build thread, youll also need to convert to MPFI. Also, you'll need shift linkage and an si harness
