92 Hatchback - loud popping exhaust, bad cat, and black soot on rear bumper
Okay, Well I took my car to the shop because the exhaust was too loud,
They took a look at it and said it can be because of the cat converter,
When I drive, its somewhat loud, got pulled over last weekend because of it,
the exhaust sometimes make a pop or something noise when I let go of the gas pedal, but it stops somewhat when I press the brakes,
could it be because of the cat converter?
My hatch does burn a little bit of oil, and idk why but it leaves black stuff on my rear bumper,
they told me to replace the cat converter,
I just want a quieter exhaust, i want stock.
I believe the exhaust on my hatch right now is a magnaflow performance exhaust.
Anyone know the brand for the OEM/STOCK cat converter?
I was thinking of getting a converter but I found this muffler/pipe at NAPA so about the same price.
Here's the link :

tell me what you guys think? should I just replace the cat converter, or go with that muffler/pipe at NAPA?
Again, I just want to ride quieter,
thanks.

BEFORE you replace your dead cat ($$$), fix the cause for the engine running rich - backfiring and black soot on bumper.
Do a tune up (plugs, wires, cap, and rotor) and then set the ignition timing to spec. Any CEL codes?

no, no engine lights come on, only when I start the car, it comes and goes like normal.
I believe the wires are aftermarket, and whats best plugs?
cap and rotor, referring to distributor?

oh thanks. I had a timing problem before with the distributor and the car wouldnt start.
Do you think a new cat converter would quiet things down tho?

I don't think so. the shop I took it too said there wasnt no holes, maybe the cat converter is bad thats it. something with the components in there i guess. im not sure tho.
do you think its just the whole exhaust system itselfs?

A bad cat won't necessarily cause loud exhaust noise. The substrtate material can crack into pieces and cause rattling, though this does not sound like your problem. Look for an exhaust leak whenever the exhaust loud. Have you looked at the muffler and exhaust pipe B?
no i havn't. im just in process of learning new things about my car so i dont know much.
I will ask someone to help look at it with me,
thanks for your help man, appreciate it.
