my b18a block from ge was way out wack, almost to the point that i was going to send it back, but i decided to keep it because i wanted to make the race the following week.

ive never done it to a GE block...never had an issue and i've dealt with 4 personally and around 10 with other peoples engines that ive built.
From what I've been told... the only time you need to align hone is when....
1. Installing main studs
2. Using main caps from another block
Align honing after sleeving only means that the machine shop really messed up the block during the installation process....

I have bought about 10 blocks from GE and shipped them one. The one I have send them came out nice when sleeved but if I buy a core from them that they provide and sleeve about 50-75% of them need a linebore or linehone or is damage in other ways. One that I got had a big dent on a main bearing seat so the dowelpin did not fit very well and the spec on that mainbearing seat was all over the place. It needed a linebore. They had tried to grind the damage down too with something so it was not someting that happened when shipped.
Another block was an "ear" on the waterpump seat cracked on. One could tell that it was damaged before cleaning, mediablasting or whatever they use because it was cleaned inside the crack.
I talked to GE and thay could take care of it if I send the blocks back but when I am in europe that is just to expensive.. I think that they could check all the blocks for a quality controll.
I still choose their blocks because I think they have the strongest design.

Thanks every one! The reason i asked is i got a B20 done and it needs align hone in a bad way and was curious to see how many people need it done after?
Other sleeving processes don't need a line hone since it doesnt crush the mains. Only GE I believe has this issue due to the way they install the sleeves. It distorts the mains during install and that is why they require line hone on most of them. And I assume they don't really measure themselves so I would assume ALL should get them done.
That is one reason people that I've been around with use other companies since the other processes dont require the line hone. When its all said and done, GE comes out more expensive than everyone else due to needing the line hone. A line hone can be as cheap as $150 to $400, depending on where you go.
That would suck if you have matching mains to the block and you're still needing to line hone. Seems like a waste of money.
Because they can't get the backdoor special price anymore?

Incorrect. Are you familiar with how sleeves are installed in GENERAL?
I know plenty of fols that didnt need a line hone after GE sleeves.
