Seems like the 3rd gear synchro is taking a ****. If you are driving the car hard and slamming it into 3rd that will cause the problem. Flush the tranny and check for metal particles. If you find some than most likely its the tranny.

the popping out part sounds like the ring spring is worn out. The grind part is either the clutch not engaging properly or your syncro is worn out.

The shift fork can be a problem as well and should be checked and gears pop out when you have fully ground away a few teeth making sort of flat spot on the gear. Replace the synchro set and gear itself and check the fork for slight notching where it contacts the synchro.

Usually happens to the fifth gear and there's even a Honda service bulletin on it but I guess it can happen to others since all 3 forks in the transmission are soft aluminum alloy.

Thought i was the gear having an entire tooth or 2 ground away which made it start popping out and the worn synchro was just one of the reasons it could grind.

Yeah q16, one of the things that can make gears grind is the soft aluminum alloy getting notches worn in them at the ends causing a misalignment to where it wont push the synchro as far as it needs to to change gears. Maybe when I find the time to rebuild the 5th on my T2W4 I could show pics unless a guy at work who usually has tons of random parts has one that is worn like that.

Just saying to the OP that it could be one of the problems but it usually only happens to the 5th gear shift fork in preludes and accords but he'll never know until he pulls it apart. Thought it would be good to mention that he gets the fork as well and not just the gear and synchro only to find the shift fork to have wear.

wait so you are saying the shift fork itself is brass? as far as i know, the only part that is brass in the trans is the syncro itself

My 3rd gear makes a slight grind sound when shifting into it, can anyone recommend good transmission oil to quiet this down? I tried normal 10w-30 and it helped slightly but after a few weeks it returns.

Sorry, I was wrong, I knew they were soft which they are as I found out today an aluminum alloy that is heat treated and is actually meant to wear slowly over time to keep the stress on other parts down.

GraphiteMW, as said in multiple threads nothing works better than the good ol Honda MTF, I have even tried other things and found the genuine OEM fluid to work best. If there is a problem with the fork or synchros fluid is only going to help so much though. I change mine every time I change the oil just cause I get it free and I still get a fifth gear grind unless I granny shift it.

Posts edited for those who may read in the future.
