Just got a 98 Accord EX
Hello everyone. I am usually all about american muscle but since my 00 v6 mustang died after 187k, I decided to buy a 1998 accord 2.3l vtec as my new beater. Right after I bought the car I learned that these cars need to have the timing belt replaced at 100k (mine has 100k), and my mechanic is getting me a timing belt kit with the 2 belts, water pump, pulleys and so on. I also read that some people recommend replacing the crank and cam seals while doing this job. I will probably attempt to do this this weekend. Do i really need an acetylene torch to heat up the crank bolt in order to get it out or can I just put the car in 1st gear, lock the motor and use a torque bar?? Also what is the deal with valve adjustments for this motor? Easy to do? Is there a writeup on it?
Thanks guys
Thanks guys
Accord FAQ
*edit* To elaborate, has the Timing Belt/Water Pump installation for a F22, which is nearly identical to the F23.
And has documentation for valve adjustments, etc.

Make sure the car has the balancer shaft seal retainer already; if not, get it and install it.
Although, Honda issued a TSB and replaced many balancer shaft seals and added the seal retainer for the 5th gen Accord 4 cylinders, the 6th gen Accord 4 cylinders also had this problem. One of my friends 6th gen Accord 4 cylinder had the balancer shaft seal pop out on him and almost all of the engine oil came pouring out. Check with the dealer parts dept. to see if the retainer is the same part number as for the 5th gen Accord.

I personally went the most expensive way and got it all done at the dealership, payed about 1k in all, and got to take out a fit sport with 40 miles on the o.d and beat the hell out of it for free. put 200miles on it in 24hours, those things handle so well with the dunlop sport tires!!
