Default GSR oil consumption

Looking at a silver 2001 GSR that passed CA smog, and runs OK, but has only 88K & burns a qt. in ~3000mi.
Seems like a problem to me, based on my bone stock '96 w/133K mi. that uses less than 1/2 qt (synthetic 10-30) in 3500-4000mi.
Female seller claims she has been told that burning oil normal for GSRs -makes no sense to me, but she probably believes it, or she might not have told me it.
On top of that, she has not a shred of maintenance or repair history, from her, or the 2 previous owners. T-belt & pump not done yet, and car has multiple scrapes (through paint, into black plastic) on both bumpers, as well as golf ball size dent in hood that scraped paint down to primer. Tires are down to ~15%
Only reason I didn't punt already is difficulty in finding GSR in silver - been posting WTB here for ~2 months, w/ 0 responce.

Got handle on T-belt, pump, other maintenance & cosmetics - the elephant in the room for me is the oil consumption - is that more likely valve seals or rings?
thanks!

seals just because rings will cause a loss in compression and not pass smog try and find a leak or u can always take your engine out and replace all the seals it will save headache time

provides 100% compession accross the board

provides fuel to the fuel rail and injectors

no spark at plugs, new coil, new module still no spark, distrbutor cap cleaned no carbon tracking, coil harness resistance tested and passed tests, circuits to module tested for voltage all voltage present

plz anyone any sugestions????

Try a new thread, does not fit the title. Not just a thread jack, but no one will find "no start" under this title.

Thanks, haven't checked compression, but there are no leaks, so it has to be burning a little more than a qt. /3000mi.

Based on info I have so far, a solid GSR eng. at 88K mi., will not burn that much oil ---Am I correct on that?

Thanks!

1.if the car is consuming because of sticky rings, running an oil change with auto-rx can siginificantly reduce the oil consumption.
2.or maybe its just a gunked up pcv valve-replacing this can significantly reduce oil consumption as well.
both 1 and 2 are caused by infrequent oil changes but can be corrected easily and is an inexpensive procedure.

if its worn rings........only a rebuild will fix it

a quart every oil change is common with the b18c. the itr is even worse. those start using as much as a quart every 1500 miles at 50k. there is probably nothing wrong with that engine at all but as mentioned a dirty pcv can increase oil burning. change that out when you get the car or if. this is also one part i'd stick with the dealer on. most parts store pcv's i've seen don't operate as efficient or smooth when you blow through them as the oem honda part.

when a b18c is near the end of it's life it will start using a quart every 500 miles. then, the most common cause of death is a fractured exhaust valve due to being unable to cool since it's coated with oil soot

Thanks torque & sideways.
I couldn't help but compare to my ' 96, which consumes so little, and w/ 45K more mi. than the '01.

Maybe compression & leak down tests will shed a little light on it.

thanks

I just don't want to spend the $ to buy a newer car w/ an engine that is not as good as the one I already have... just to get the color I want.
