i am trying to clean the engine bay on my 93 si. i noticed the big black ugly canister on the firewall. i beleive it is for emissions. what exactly is it for and what does it do. is it safe to remove it and will that cause any issues.(rough idle, poor mpg or emissions problems. what should i do with the lines. thanks

if it is an evap canister also known as a charcoal canister it takes the fuel vapors that your car makes when parked.. cause we should all know gas vaporizes and is bad for the environment...it also releases those vapors into your intake, theoretically saving the environment and giving you better gas mileage. instead of completely removing it it would be better if you relocated it someplace, just try to make it no lower than the top of the fuel tank. the evap line from the fuel tank can flood the canister destroying the charcoal thats inside rendering it useless.. also the reason when the gas pump stops pumping at the gas station you shouldnt try squeezing in that extra $0.25

just remove it and unplug it. you'll be fine. you can either leave the tank vented to atmoshpere or plug it.

save it for smog though!
