My $400 CRX Progression Thread
I've always wanted to do one of these kinds of threads, so I figured this would be the perfect car to do so with. I recently found this on a local car forum in the classifieds. I had been watching it for a couple weeks, it was originally posted for a little over a grand. Then the wheels were parted and it went down to $800. Lots of people kept flaking so it was up for $500. Now it was a 350 round trip drive, about 20 miles north of the Oklahoma/Kansas border. Told the guy if I had to drive that far I would only give him $400. It took some persuading and thinking on his part but he budged and accepted.
So I went and looked at the car and he did a pretty good job explaining most of the **** over the phone. Obviously a few things will be overlooked or missed, but it's just minor stuff. I was handed what appears to be a clean Oklahoma title. He even threw some random stuff in like a GSR intake manifold, GSR DC header, test pipe, intercooler piping, couplers, t-clamps.. The car came with a full set of oem wheels, but only two had tires. There was a full sized spare and a donut on the back. The exhaust is included, but cut in half and off the car. Needs some random stuff like HVAC controls, passenger window, new steering wheel, yada yada. The car made it for the 170 mile drive back to my house though.
To me one of the best parts about this car, is it's equipped with a pretty nicely installed 4pt roll cage. It's a little bit rusty on the welds on the bottom so I'm going to sand and primer a little bit before I put the carpet back in. Nothing that's about to rust through or anything like that. Has a working A/C apparently, haven't had the chance to test it yet though due to the lack of HVAC controls. The cage just BEGS for me to make this car a monster, but I think I'm going to sell my EK and drive this as a cheaper alternative. I'm definitely doing a mini-me swap, then LS swap then hopefully boost. Important thing right now is getting the car road worthy though.
I'll be updating this as I go a long. I'm picking up pretty much all the parts I need this weekend in KC, and am planning on just driving the car back sometime next week or so and putting everything on at my dad's place. So what do you think H-T? Did I get a steal for a running and driving CRX with no rust in the quarters? Yes the car is an SI model.
First thing is getting the interior put back in completely and looking good, then fixing the exhaust and then PAINT! I'm thinking white, mainly because the car was originally white. Haven't had a white car since I was 16 though and have been wanting another white ride.
Also, suggestions on cheap ski racks? I go back to Colorado often. Also if anyone has pics of their CRX with a rack post it up.

I'll get more pictures when I get back in town and start working on it more. The goal is to get it tagged and insured within the next two weeks and start driving it every day. Then I can list the EK and hopefully get it sold asap.
The cage alone would have easily been over $400. The way I look at it, the only time I see $400 Hondas they are either shells or shitty looking EF sedans.
With the cage and seeing a motor mount that was "filled" with what looks like red polyurethane, it makes me wonder if this car was swapped in the past or ever boosted and/or built. It's got a good running stock d16a6 in it though. Hoping I can score a Z6 head and P28 for cheap soon.

Well I've finally gotten a chance to do some work on the car. I did a quick one hour paint job that I'm rather ashamed of, but hey it looks ten times better then pink. I took the GSR wheels off my EK and bought some ls webs to put on the EK to sell it. However I'm curious how the webs will look on the CRX. Kind of want to keep the GSR wheels since they are pretty rare, and I like the way they look. As soon as I get the other ride sold I want to get her lowered.
But including three rattle cans, I have about $480 invested total so far. $580 if you include buying the ls webs as replacement wheels.

Good deal on the car, very surprised you didn't mask off the rear windows in the hatch. Those are plastic, not glass, you will now have to be extra careful taking off that over spray
Whenever I have the time and the weather corporates, I'm planning on sanding off the entire coat and reapplying the paint the right way. Sticking with white primer then over the winter I'll probably just have maaco spray it.
Well I got the sound system transferred from the Civic to the CRX. Sounds a lot better in a hatchback, nice not having the trunk and everything else rattle all the time. Had to completely re-wire the driver side taillight harness, no fun. Got an OEM steering wheel back on. Started a 96-00 center console swap. Put my LS **** in. Rest of the interior is pretty much back in. Does anyone know if any EF glovebox will work in the CRX?

lol i bought my ef sedan for 300 and its a thousand times cleaner then that, was automatic when i bought it but it came on coil overs and came with nice speakers and a deck that worked im not trippin
Good for you, I personally wouldn't pay $300 for a ugly automatic EF Sedan. I'm actually about to make $100 off of parts that came with the car, so that brings me down to $300 initial cost.
I would be more concerned about why the front driver side wheel is pushed so far back the tire is almost touching the fender. A running car for 400 isnt that bad of a deal though. Good luck.
That's just the fender not being bolted on correctly. I'm not even going to bother with lining body panels correctly right now until I can get new fenders. Guy I know is supposed to be selling me a set for $80 that are sanded, primered and even rolled already. Figured that's a pretty good deal, just need to wait until I can come up with the extra cash.
you have a decent platform to start with but putting a walmart paint job on it and painting you windows ,trim , and taillights isint the way to start you might as well just put a APC sticker on the winsheild and a big doublestack wing on it cause thats the direction your heading now RICER lol

Now you're going to have to replace the **** you got overspray all over. Would've taken 10 seconds to mask up the vitals.
