After smelling a hint of gas out side of the car, I took my 96 Accord EX Coupe to the honda dealer.

The dealer said the fuel lines are rusted and a small amount of gas is sipping out. They also said since the brake lines are also starting to go, might as well replace those also since they are right next to the gas lines.

They quoted me $2000!

Anyone had to replace the lines? How much did it cost you to take it to the shop?

 

Don't have it done at the dealer if anything...that's asking to be raped.

Have a second mechanic look at it before you do anything.

 

I went to Midas and they fixed it for $600. They replaced the leaky fuel lines without having to ruin the other lines.

Much better then paying $2000 at the dealer!

My Auto Tech class do it for free. All you have to do is buy the lines and parts then the students there puts it on and the instructor checks it and take it out for a spin to see if it'll burst out leaking and what not. Helluva deal!

 

dealer quoted me $2200! i have an '02 Accord 107K miles, nothing leaking yet but they said lines are very rusty

trying to decide if i should keep the car long term or not, i had it since new with zero problems, just replaced the timing belt for $700 at the dealer and that is when they pointed out the fuel/brake lines

also mentioned lower ball joints ($400)

anyone know of what you can to prevent (or at least postpone) corrosion on brake and fuel lines, i have an 04 odyssey, maybe i can do something like spray them or a light oil on them?

 

Yeah, that's ridiculous. Dealerships do good work, but they always charge way too much. I haven't done it myself, but I've heard brake lines are a relatively easy DIY project. Fuel might be trickier.

 

mabye u could coat them with grease but brake lines are not usually things you want to take risks with..

 

I would try myself...it would be a fun project. many here to help. Assess tool needed, buy fuel line and go at it...oh, take fuel pump fuse and disconnect neg battery before starting. Come to LA, I will help you.

 

If they have to replace all the metal hardlines on the underside of the car that doesn't sound like it would be to far off to me. A bit pricey, but not too far off.

 

i did the brake lines on my sister's '01 sedan. it was a bit of a pain but mostly because it was my first time doing them. maybe 2 hours. parts from the dealer were ~$220. it would have totaled almost $600 in parts if i did the fuel lines as well but they were fine.

on the OP's '96 all five would be about $500 list price... so $1,500 labor!?! i don't think the labor rate is about $100/hr now, is it? so more than 15hrs to replace some hard lines... that is astronomical.
