Your hydro carbons are to high, run a fuel injection cleaner and do an oil change before you go back, also run the car for a good 30 mins to give time for your cat to get good and hot

HC's or NOx? I'm sorry I'm from another cost and those codes meant nothing "554 270 688 Failed" and something before that had "No (PMR)"?
Trying to learn all I can, so sorry for the stupid question.

I don't see anything regarding hydro carbons with what the OP posted. It only is one of the reading of NO with a typo of PMR which should probably be PPM (part per million). Normally, in CA there should be more info. than what was posted regarding the NO (e.g., another NO reading at a different speed. i.e., 25 mph too).

OP, you may want to read this thread:

Normally the CA smog test results look something like this:

Auto: 1996 Honda Prelude, VTEC H22A
Test: June 2004
CO2 O2
Test RPM MEAS MEAS
15mph 1802 14.9 0.0
25mph 2106 14.9 0.0

HC
Test RPM MAX AVG MEAS
15mph 1802 58 9 56
25mph 2106 42 7 38

CO
Test RPM MAX AVG MEAS
15mph 1802 0.52 0.02 0.08
25mph 2106 0.50 0.03 0.05

NO
Test RPM MAX AVG MEAS
15mph 1802 451 57 204
25mph 2106 738 50 139

Max being the maximum allowed for that car, measured is what that car actual readings are.

No, I live in California, and the way he has it writen up is the hc are high, and we don't go by mph here we jus use rpm range, so in the measurements he posted was for 2500 rpm not the base idle rpm, I know i jus had to go through all this stuff last week on my cb9 plus I'm a certified smog guy

HC (PPM)
Test RPM MAX AVG MEAS
15mph 81 27 36
25mph 91 21 18

You passed on the Hydrocarbon (HC) portion of the test.

I also live in CA. Several years ago, they did change the CA smog test. As noted on wiki:
"There are two different ways a smog check is implemented: ASM & TSI. TSI (Two Speed Idle) test is used to inspect all wheel drive (AWD) vehicles. The vehicle is inspected at 2500rpm and idle. This is how all vehicles were inspected prior to 1997. ASM (Acceleration Simulation Mode) test procedures involve operating the vehicle on a dyno at 15 mph and 25 mph under load. Operating an ASM test allows for the measurement of a third emission gas (smog) nitrogen oxide (NOx). "

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Smog_Check

Your car's test, as is with cars requiring smog checks in enhanced areas of CA (based on zip codes), was probably done on a dyno, as it shows the readings at 15 mph and 25 mph. Looks like you failed on the NOx (nitrogen oxide) portion of the test. See link for enhanced areas of CA: http://www.bar.ca.gov/80_BARResource...rogram_Map.pdf

Im gonna clean my EGR ports and chech the succion on the EGR valve. I think I swap out my cat three years ago, thats bull ****, im not forking out another $300 to have it replace. Thats crap, thats gonna be the last thing Im gonna try to switch out if it does not want to pass smog.

Definitely clean your EGR ports, check the timing, I recommend to set timing at 13 degrees since it's +/- 2 from base of 15, and run Seafoam through the engine via brake booster port. From your readings the catalyst is fine. Definitely, do not run Seafoam right before the smog test, it will fail for visible smoke from tail pipe.

Remember high compression ratio, high cylinder pressure, running lean, will always elevate NOx readings.

I just passed my smog test after a second attempt last month. My wife took the car to a local shop thinking all was going to be fine and it failed the first time. I had to change the spark plugs, use injector cleaner etc plus tweak it on a dyno due to running with a Bisi stage 2 cam.

Failed a 2nd time. Though my numbers improved my nox# were still high 658 and the max is 554.
I pulled the egr plugs and valve, sprayed the crap out of it, complete tune up and I still failed.
I purchased a vacum pum to check egr suction, but Im gonna need a procedure or write up, if anyone has one.
So here are my new numbers:
CO2 O2
Test RPM MEAS MEAS
15mph 1842 14.9 0.2
25mph 2562 15.0 0.1

HC (PPM)
Test RPM MAX AVG MEAS
15mph 81 27 37
25mph 91 21 21

CO
Test RPM MAX AVG MEAS
15mph 0.74 0.16 0.29
25mph 0.62 0.11 0.06

NO (PPM)
Test RPM MAX AVG MEAS
15mph 554 270 658 (before it was 688)
25mph 511 207 497

15mph FAIL
25mph PASS

See if RobyWolf's post may help you, where they changed the timing, adjusted valve clearance, and changed a slow O2 sensor:

Yeah check your timing and valve clearance because if its off just a little bit you will fail in the 15 mph range and pass in 25mph!

redbull, Thats was a good reference for me to read. Thanks. If I had to bet my last dollar, I think Im running lean. I did reset the fast idle about two months ago. My cooling system is fine, just did my timing belt, valve adjustment and water pump, no leaks. I didnt really get the part of reseting timing marks from 17 to 15. I got my set at 16, like right in the midle red line, (clarification).
Did you come accross this same problem, how did you resolve your issue?

I never had this issue personally. From what I read for 4th gen Accords, clogged EGR ports were a common problem which may cause the high NOx. But, it sounds like you already cleaned that.

Like Dude_123 posted, you can adjust your timing -/+2 from the base of 15. He recommended adjusting to 13. In the other link I posted, they also adjusted down the timing, RobyWolf's timing was initially at 17, they adjusted down to 15. But, what I also read elsewhere, was that adjusting the timing down may only reduce NOx a little (but, it may be enough for you to pass though), at the expense of CO and HC. I am no smog tech; but, trying to help out with information and facts if I can. Dude_123 is the real certified enhanced area smog tech in your thread.

You don't seem to have a cooling problem, so that is probably ruled out. Dude_123 also said from your readings, your cat probably is good.

Like the other links stated, an O2 sensor failing lean can also cause the higher NOx.

Good luck.

x2 on the timing adjustment to 13, I had to put mine there at 13 as well.

Im leaning towards being abit on the lean side. I notice my purge cut off solenoid valve is ticking and tickin radically. Ive swap it out twice and with giving time it starts to tick. Im gonna still follow up on everyones recomendations aswell.

When is the last time you changed your coolant? NOx usually mean high engine temperatures. Make sure the coolant system is bled and change your oil combined with fresh spark plugs. Are you putting any additives in the gas like isoheet? That would cause the NOx to be high if you did. Your cat seems to be working well going by the other results from HC and CO

Matty thanks, coolant is good, I event burp it my cooling system. The only gas additive was half a can of SEAFOAM and that came and went like to full tanks ago. Im get new wire set & plugs for my car, its been like three years. I'll follow your recomendation but I will also follow up on other issues as you read all about them. What plugs do you recommend?
