Default 2010 rolls back while in drive

I have a 2010 Civic EX automatic and it rolls freely backwards if on a slight slope while in drive if gas is not applied. I realize all cars will roll but there is no forward torque at all. It is like having a manual transmission with the clutch pedal pushed in. I have never had a car that did not apply some forward torque while in drive. Honda service says this is normal, but I have owned many cars (and many Honda's) and have never had this happen.

Does anyone else notice this or is there something wrong with my transmission?

There's absolutely something wrong. Take it back to the dealer and threaten to call Honda of America if they won't fix it. Make it very clear that you know your car isn't supposed to do this. Simply going to another dealer will allow that dealer to continue screwing people.

I have a 2010 Honda EX as well and it does the same. Mine is auto so it is a bit weird but I do believe that it is normal with this car as well as many other things that would seem bizarre on another car. Don't waste your time with taking it to another dealership. My car is made in Canada eh

There's nothing wrong with it, unless it rolls backwards with your foot on the brake. Honda does all manner of things to improve fuel efficiency. Do you really need a drag on the engine using extra fuel when you're sitting still? Doing away with that is something honda has been working on for many years. They take it to the extreme on their hybrid models, turning the engine off entirely at stops. The bad old days of standing on the brake with both feet waiting for fast idle to kick down are long gone.

i just had 06 ex, and 08 ex, both autos, both rolled backwards on slight hills....

i agree its to reduce load on the engine at idle, to get better fuel economy...
