Default AC question

My a/c in my 01 civic EX is gone. Lots of noise from the clutch/compressor. I want to just cut the compressor belt however I have been told NO my engine will not run. It looks like the belt goes only to the compressor and nothing else. Anybody know for sure if its safe to cut the belt that runs from the clutch/compressor down to the lower part of engine without causing a problem in this year and model. Also car has 165K on it seems like I'm dropping money left and right, wheel bearings, control arm, condenser(3 years ago), window control etc. At what point do you decide its a losing battle and spring for a new ride??

Just get a belt for a Civic that doesn't have A/C. It wasn't stock on all models.

Pretty sure the HX did not come standard c AC for fuel ecomony purposes, so check that.
