For safety they go in back. This reduces the chance that the car will oversteer or spin out.

For people that dont care about that they can go in front to increase life of the whole set or get more grip up front assuming its a better (stickier) tire.

Since 4 tires need to be replaced, it doesn't matter where you put the first 2, as the other 2 new tires will go on the other axle.

If you have four tires - hopefully all of the same make and model - most tire dealers (including the Tire Rack) will tell you to put the ones with more tread depth (such as new tires) on the REAR. The reason is exactly as alphalanos describes; they will provide better grip in the rear. As a result, the car will have more of a tendency to understeer, i.e. to plow straight ahead when turning, which is considered safer than oversteer, in which the rear end has a tendency to spin around on you.

However, most FWD cars wear the front tires faster than the rear tires. So, if you want all four tires to wear out at about the same time, you will need to put the tires with more tread on the FRONT. If you decide to do this, just be aware of the possibility that this will increase oversteer in the car's handling.

ok, so they did good by putting them in the rear..however, see my other post. I "paid" for a 4 wheel aligment, and my steeing wheel is still crooked!
