I've been looking at ways to lower IAT and EGT on my setup and came across what some s2k people do. They have a custom DIY vent hood.

I am thinking of doing something like this with my ITR hood. Any suggestions on which holes to cut out to make it look good if any?


Here are some ideas that I had....

Option 1 vents above manifold and turbo


Option 2 vents above charge pipe


Option 3 vents above manifold, turbo, and partial charge pipe


Any other ideas of which to cut out would be great. Of course I would not use my stock hood. Would buy a beater hood to mess with and then paint. Just an idea, im not 100% set on doing this. I dont want to buy a cf hood with vents as none of them look good to me. If I cant make it look good then its just stock hood for me again.

 

That s2000 looks like it was made for it, look nicely done on that silver one. It might look a bit uneven on the itr I reckon because you would need to do the middle ones to help much?

 

This would be pointless at any other time other than when sitting still. Your EGT temp would show zero difference at all times. The only advantage to the s2k guys doing this mod is to reduce underhood temps while sitting still because those vents run right over top of the exhaust manifold. It was proven like 4 years ago when this mod became popular not to pull hot air out while moving due to the way the air passes over the hood. They do make a reverse scoop hood (mugen maybe?) for the integra that does create a vacuum over the exhaust manifold and pulls hot air out of the engine bay at speed. If you want to reduce under hood temps, use header wrap. If you REALLY want to reduce IAT, use a small shot of nitrous or some kind of fogger (meth, water) system to mix with the charge.

 

I was thinking of the nitrous route but that would be more expensive than what I am looking for at the moment. Heat is not a concern currently, only under conditions where I run very hard back to back to back. I was thinking of more of a helper than a problem solver.

 

Well in that case cutting your hood would help with the heat soak issues, you could cut the skeleton out to make it look better and do one solid vent over your manifold. But I think header wrapping as much as you can would help the most.

 

Yeah people have told me to powdercoat the turbo manifold as well. I was just thinking of a easier helping solution than taking my car apart.

I totally understand where you are coming from though. Your suggestions are the best suggestions in regards to heat.

Currently my IAT are 130 or lower and my engine temp is 190s or lower unless im driving around with A/C which jumps to maybe 200.

Cutting out the skeleton would be smart but I want to refrain from that for now unless necessary but what the hell right? Its a beater hood I'm going to be working on. Cant go wrong with $40-$65 hoods
