So I was getting my mini-me swap put into my 93dx hatch, and all is well..........until it comes to the axle part that is. F.Y.I., the axle was bad, hence the need for swap-age. I have a 1/2" drive ratchet on a heavy duty socket, and the bar from my jack as an extension to help with more leverage. I am bouncing and bouncing, giving a bit more pressure with every bounce.
"This isn't working" I say.
So I get the "pb blaster" out, and spray the sh*t out of the nut, the backside, through the top of the rotor, all over every angle I could possibly get to this nut from. At this point I decided to give it a few minutes to soak and do "it's thing". After about 1/2 an hour, I went back to it. Same tools, same position, same everything. I get a bit overzealous, and the wrench broke CLEAN at the chuck, leaving said chuck in the socket and sending the socket flying. Now, as I fall backward, I see the ratchet flying through the air like shrapnel from an exploded frag grenade. Startled and bewildered, I pick myself up to see that I am bleeding rather heavily from my eyelid. I now have a vagina just below my eyebrow! Horrible way to finish up a project right? Now that is enough with the story telling, I just wanted to give a decent read to those who view. Are there any Jedi tricks to getting a stuck axle nut off? If so, I'd like to hear/try them.

 

 

3/4 drive socket and breaker bar plus about 8 feet of pipe, or a good impact gun with 32mm impact socket.

 

did you raise the stake in the nut?

 

is the car still on the ground? is the car in gear? you might need a impact gun, or a 1/2" breaker bar.

 

Impact, drive to a shop have them zap it off and put back on then drive it home and take it off yourself

 

Yes the stake is out, car is on a stand, and I am using a crow-bar to keep the hub from spinning. Is an impact going to make that big of a difference? I would think that 160lbs, bouncing on it; with a 4' extension, would do it if an impact will. I can't drive it with the passenger axle hanging on the ground, and I really don't want to tow it! I guess that I'll get a compressor and a bust out the impact set.

 

X2 on the impact gun. I couldn't get my one axle nut off while doing the lower ball joints. I used my impact with no luck at all, so I drop to a friend of my father's shop, had him break it loose with his gun and snug it up so I could take it off when I got home.

Did the metal get in your eye? Or just underneath it on the cheek bone? Eitherway crazy story.

 

crack it loose w the wheel on the ground. go thru the rim. or the 32mm wont fit

with the car on a jack stand, youre gonna need the impact gun. if you are going to use a breaker bar, put the car on the ground (with the wheel back on, obviously). then take the center cap off, and put the car in 4th gear. make sure the axle nut is tabbed out (so it will spin freely), and then go at it. ive been able to break them loose with no problem that way. but i usually use my impact gun, which is rated at ~500 ft/lbs.

 

160lb's wobbling on a ratchet is not an impact, that's a gradual increase in force, its not going to break this nut free. it's called an impact gun because it gives a huge, sudden burst of energy, aka an impact.

 

I've always been able to get the axle nut off with the wheel on the ground, and only using an 18" breaker bar. On an old 89, I let the pb blaster soak overnight.

 

Impact it is then! No metal in my eye, just the cut above and under the eye.

 

I didnt have access to an impact gun at the time and ended up just cutting it off with a dremel lol But the axel was F@cked up anyway so.

 

i put a punch in the rotor to stop it on the caliper... then put my old exhaust from cat to muffler on a 1/2in breaker and jumped on it on it about 3 times and it broke loose lol, might have put a jack stand on the pipe to support the angle

 

A Dremel!? That would take days to cut with a Dremel! I'm just gonna try the impact. If that doesn't work, then I'll just replace the knuckle itself. This axle is toast as well.

Dremel takes 5 minutes but is cheaper.

 

a nice big impact gun (good brand) with around 120 psi (what we have at the shop) of compressed air should knock it right off. tho if this is not available buy a huge 1/2 breaker bar not a wratchet w/ a heavy duty 32 mm and attach ur jack.. dont bounce on it thats what will break the socket or breaker bar just set it up so u can stand on it and keep applying heavier pressure, maybe even 2 people to step on it or so. try to roughly put atleast 300-350 pounds on the breaker bar. IF ALL THAT FAILS then spray the living **** out of it with PB and then grab a torch, torch the ****er til it gets redder then a red apple and quickly put the breaker bar on it and it should pop right off when its burning hot.

 

300ft lbs isn't going to touch an axle nut. Think more like 600ft lbs.

 

not true at all, you dont know the history of it it could of been off recently, if its been removed before itl take alot less then u think. if its never been removed, hell it could take more then 600. im just giving him approx and if 300 dont work then making it red hot will

 

If the OP is breaking 1/2 drive ratchets its not coming off with 300ft lbs.

 

ive never had an issue using a piece of 8foot fence post around the ratchet need tons of leverage or an impact gun

 

Sorry but you got no idea what your talking about. Ifr it was removed recently the only way this would happen is he stripped/ burred the threads.
I removed an axle and 3 years later ( CANADIAN WINTERS INCLUDED) it removed no problem.
as stated get 3/4 in breaker bar and find some fence post ( im sure a neighbour around will have something)

If not find a propane tank and heat that sob.
BTW a crowbar in your wheel studs, are they burring?

i saw pictures awhile ago of some american pulling wires through his truck with needle nose pliers, the pliers slipped and the end(top part known as the point) went right into his eye. pretty sure he lost most of the vision in his eye.
