Default Mounting muffler in place of resonator

I just bought a VRS piping kit and was wondering if I id be able to mount a muffler(most likely no biger than 4-5in in diameter) in the center of my car were the resonator is. Just wondering if anyone has mounted theres in that postion before and what size muffler they used. Pictures would be great if you had them. Probably going with a Magnaflow straight thru.

I made my 3" with a 5" OD round resonator in the middle of the car. It's just behind the shifter, and hangs about 1" below the lowest part of the undercarriage & side skirts.

If you mean muffler as in 5"x9" oval, good luck. It's very tight under there, and IMO doesn't offer much extra sound reduction if it's straight-through vs a round resonator.

Whats the difference between the straight through muffler and a resonator? I thought they were the same but the muffler area more area cause of its size, to muffle.

If both are straight-through designs, the amount of packing is the only difference. Sound waves are boucing through that packing and back, and the more packing in there, the more sound reduction. However, there's a point of diminishing returns, meaning 2x packing doesn't yeild 2x sound reduction.

So I wouldn't recommend stuffing a 4"x9" muffler under a Civic. I also would not recommend a full straight-through exhaust on an NA car, especially if there's no cat in place. It's the intake that sings on those builds, not the exhaust.

Going with the Magnaflow, something like this. Gonna get the six inch though.

Buddy of mine had it on his CRX and it sounded pretty good.

I build exhaust systems like this so I was just trying to guage the market. I'm not sure what muffler and resonator are used but I'd say $1500 is at the top of the spectrum. It looks like a very nice piece. Usually just the cost on materials alone blows the normal customer out of the water.

yeah i think the vibrant j-bends were like 275$ a peice then you got 2 magnaflow stainless mufflers and the labor to tig it all is were the money is. they use some kind of paste on the inside of the welds to make the welds flush on the inside of the pipes. they can do a cheaper exhaust but it wont be like the one i showed you. i did a 3 1/2 out of mild steel on my 93 hatch and i could prob make it for around 300 to 500 depending on what mufflers you wanted

Vibrant has them for $170 a piece but others have them cheaper. Theirs a big jump in price and availability from 3" to 3.5" I can even get 4" for cheap then 3.5". I try to keep the costs down, on the materials since the labor hours and consumables ad up real fast. Stainless ain't cheap. I wish I had customers that would drop $500 plus on two bends. I'm sure the paste is solar flux. They do that instead of back purging. Cost on the magnaflows is under $100 a piece. The V bands are what add up the quickest at $65 a piece. Its a super nice exhaust and worth $1500. i appriciate your input on the exhaust. It's always nice to get the opinions of people have have forked out the cash to get a high end exhaust like yourself

Is that bend of the muffler just a 45?

Are you talking about the turn down coming out of the muffler? If so it apears to be close to 45. As far as the turn down goes the angle isn't too crucial. I think the cut is more important to get the look your going for. If your just going to a regular muffler shop be sure and take a pic with you otherwise you'll get the run of the mill truck style turndown. Most muffler shops don't really keep up with the import trends so the pic will do wonders when it comes to setting up the tip.

Well got my muffler today, trying to decide if I wanna get another Header or not. Looking for something around $400, somewhat interested in a RMF replica. Has anyone put on on a 2.0?
