New Dash ?
I swapped my dash out with 1 I picked up on a local site. Now I have a different VIN# thN what it says on the registration. Is this going to be a problem if I ever get pulled over by a cop? There is still the VIN# inside the driver door. Just wondering if anyone has been pulled over and messed with and what happened?
Just swap the VIN plate with your original. Drill the rivets out and re-rivet. Paint the rivet heads black, or even use a Sharpie to color them black. That way it looks factory
I think swapping VIN plates might be technically illegal somehow, but it's what I've always done.

Well technically, it's not actually altering the VIN. Because your not changing any numbers or letters. Your just replacing the VIN with the correct one. When I replaced my dash, I just drilled out the rivets and re re-riveted it on to the new dash.
I'd imagine it's a broad law aimed at chop shop type of dealings (stealing cars, altering VINs to "launder" the car/parts back to being "clean", etc.)
Logically, if I go buy a new dash, and thus own both dashes - I don't see how it's illegal to swap my correct VIN onto the new dash.
Besides, (at least in Texas), when I buy dashes at the junkyard, the junkyard won't sell them to me with the VIN plate on it. They always cut the VIN off before I can leave with the dash. So of course I've got to stick my VIN plate back on there
OP - it probably doesn't matter much. I don't know that cops check your VIN when they pull you over. I know they check your registration/inspection (which is right above the VIN plate in Texas). I really wouldn't think the average traffic cop would have any reason to run your VIN/check it all out unless he had reason to believe there was some shady stuff going on or suspected your car of being full of stolen parts or something.
