Default My First Build Thread

After years of reading other peoples build threads I finally decided to make my own. This is my first build THREAD but is not my first build at all. I've built tons of Honda's, a few Mustangs and 2 dsm's back in the day. But no one cares about that. My build this time is going to be an eg hatch.

I bought it two weeks ago from a friend because I realized that selling my first red eg was a bad decision. I bought the car for next to nothing but I basically got nothing in return so that worked out pretty well.

It has stock blown struts with cut factory springs, no motor, no brakes, no wiring, fuel lines, no interior at all or anything really. So it looks like I'm going to have to pretty much do this thing from the ground up.

The one good thing about the car is the paint is perfect, no fading or rust. So I won't have to do any body work which is always a plus.

Here is a picture of it as is...

No motor or brakes and the exhaust isn't there any more either. But it does have some horrible oem suspension that I'll will be replacing first thing. That's all I have for now but I'm going to be putting a lot of time into this thing in the next few weeks.

But as of right now I have literally no parts and have no idea what build I'll be doing. But I'm going to start looking for parts tomorrow at work and we'll go from there.

Today was pretty productive. I stripped out what interior the car had and power washed everything after removing the dash board. One thing I realized was it looks like I'm going to have to re wire the entire car. I'll probably just get new harnesses when I do the tuck later on. But for now I just ripped everything out so the car is bare metal.

I'm going to be going to a friend house to look at some of his parts tomorrow for interior pieces. And another friend has a few motors that I might be buying. He has a stock LS and a stock k20. The K20 doesn't have a trans and the b18 has a blown trans. But both are supposed to have low miles and have no problems.

I'll know what motor I'm doing tomorrow, but as of right now anything is a possibility.

I'd love to put up some pictures but my damn camera broke. Luckily I'll be getting a new one tomorrow so I can hopefully put up some more video once I'm done with the build.

Yea that paint looks good. Suspension sounds like a good place to start. I'm guessing this will be an FI build since your build is in this forum. A turbo K would be bad ***!

I got really bored tonight because nothing was on tv but I decided to go ahead and work on the suspension. rriiiiiggghhhhttt.... I've never seen so many random bolts holding a suspension together. If this thing weighed much more than a bag of potatoes it would have probably fallen apart.

When we were getting it up on the trailer I heard a lot of random noises but I assumed it was the trailer. Well I come to find out that literally every bolt is loose. And on top of that, a good amount of them are random mismatched bolts that don't even fit. The only thing holding my rear struts to my LCA was a long nail that was bent around the end...

I decided to just take off what I could tonight and start with the suspension first thing because I'd like to have a car that wont fall apart standing still let a lone while I'm driving the snot out of it.

My other cars are using my normal jack stands so I could only use two at a time so I decided to jump on the rear first. I took everything off of the rear. It was surprisingly easy since most of the bolts were either loose or nails so that really didn't take to look at all. But after about an hour of work I got everything off and thrown away in the trash. I'll have to start looking around for some suspension parts. But I will most likely just get some through work like I normally do tomorrow.

I also decided I might as well do the brakes while I'm doing the suspension. I'm not sure what I'm doing right now but I want rotors all the way around with the normal x drilled/slotted rotors and some hawk pads that I'll also probably get from work tomorrow. While I was cleaning everything up I found my stainless brake lines that I had from a few cars back and I decided to just throw them on there and they look ok, I just hope they work ok. I've never used them before.

I also borrowed my buddies cell phone and took a picture of the car as it is right now in all of it's glory.

But that's all for tonight. I have work early tomorrow morning and then once I get off I'll head over to my buddies shop and see what motors he has for me. I'm really wanting a K right now but I know he has a full stock LS swap in a green hatch that he'll sell me for stupid cheap. And that IS what I know best, but we'll have to figure that out tomorrow.

Well I found a motor. A 100% stock OBD1 B18B =-) for $400 with a free blown transmission...

The one draw back was it was still in the car and he took off $100 if I would take it out myself and then put in a gsr motor for him. Luckily everything went smooth. He had innovative mounts for the B18b so they worked fine for the gsr motor. But we got it all in and running about 3 hours after we started. And I got myself a running motor that had perfect compression across the board and but the leak down was a little crappy. But that's fine for what I plan on doing. Here are a few pictures of the process.

and here is my new dirty *** motor with broken gsr transmission.

I didn't get to really take a look at the motor but all that matters is it's a b18b block and the valve cover has never been taken off which makes me feel all good inside.

One good thing I guess is he included msd dizzy/coil. I'm pretty sure I wont be able to use it but I can at least sell it and get what I need to run vtec.

As of right now I'm planning on doing a mildly built ls vtec with stock sleeves depending on how they look to the guys at M&M. If there is something wrong with the block I'll bore it to 84mm and/or sleeve it but as of right now I'm planning on doing a 81.5mm clean up to make sure everything seals correctly. I know where I can get a set of CP's for stupid cheap and I have a set of brand new rods in my garage somewhere that I can throw in there. I just want to see if I have to do any machining on the block. From what my friend said it didn't burn any oil and the compression test was amazing for a stock motor. But I'll have to wait and see until tomorrow.

Tomorrow I plan to take the motor apart, get it cleaned up and send it off to the M&M Machining to get hot tanked and cleaned up if need be along with replacing all of the bearings. They normally only take about 5 business days to get back to me so hopefully I'll get it back by next Thursday or Friday.

I also ordered new suspension tonight. Just a basic coil over setup but it should be good for the track. I don't really care too much for the suspension since I wont be taking this car around turns I just need it to be stiff. I still don't know what kind of traction bars I'll be running. Or if I might go tube frame on the front end. I don't plan on it because I don't want to run in another class because of something that doesn't really make much of a difference in performance even though it is SOOOO much easier working on a car with a tube frame front end I just don't want to bother with it. But that might change as I go along.

That's it for tonight. Going to head out for a little fun and then off to work tomorrow at 7am =-(

I realized M&M machining was closed today until Monday so I decided to just clean up the motor and trans and then spray them down with some high temp engine paint.

Here is a before

And after

Yes, I painted the blown trans AND my oil pan. Even if it is bad I can still sell the trans to someone for stupid cheap if they wants off of it so it might as well look nice. And I'm going to be running a Moroso pan with a better return line for the turbo. I really don't like how this one looked. But I wont be doing that any time soon.

Tomorrow I'm going to head off to the junk yard to see if I can get any seats or interior pieces for the car because I really don't like the whole stripped down car look. Yea, it'll be faster but it looks horrible. I'm not saying I'm hoping for full interior but I just don't want it to look like the car was stolen all the time lol.

And then I'll take apart the motor and see how it looks on the inside. From what my buddy was saying it may have bad valve seals or valves in general but it doesn't really matter since I'm going ls vtec any way and will be using a b16 head. Which I'm still looking for btw. I also need to get the GE lsvtec kit from the shop along with some oil fittings.

I still have no clue what turbo I'll be running this time...

I got my block back from M&M today. Looks awesome. There weren't any scratches or grooves but I had them clean it up and bore it to a 81.5mm. I think I'm going to strip the paint off and paint it another color. But for right now I'll just keep it how it is. Here are a few pictures of it...

Next thing I need to get is all of the bearings along with the rotating assembly. The deal I thought I was going to have with the 81.5mm 9.7:1 cp's fell through so I'm back to looking for pistons again. Good thing is I do have my Manley turbo tuff rods ready to go in once I get everything else.

I haven't been able to work on the car much because of school starting back up, work and having to fix my neighbors car and I keep finding problem after problem on this thing. But I've known the bastard since he was a little kid and I can't just leave him out to dry. Good thing is his car is almost done and mine is starting to pick up now that I have a block, so it's coming along. Slower than usual but it'll get there eventually.

My original goal to get the car done for next months drag day isn't going to happen mainly because even if I finish the car I wont be able to go lol. So for now I'm just trying to get it done for spring 2011. I want to drive this thing the second there is no salt on the roads.

Tomorrow my buddy that sold me his motor is going to weld me up a cage. I'm not sure what kind of cage were going to do yet but I just need to be legal for 9's and a 150mph trap. But I don't want to cut holes in the back for a parachute yet since as of right now the car makes 0 whp lol. That will come later. I'm also going to try to mount the battery somewhere in the back. I'm not sure where yet but I really don't want it to just be sitting out in the open where everyone can see it. Who knows. I'll have some more pictures once we get started on that stuff but that's all for now.

I've had 3 or 4 sleeved cars and even more non sleeved cars and for the most part I don't think it's worth the money or time to sleeve them. This car isn't going to be a ***** to the wall car like the last one I built. It's just going to be a low 10 second maybe high 9 second street car. So I don't really want to go over board and have then end up taking forever to finish. So this car is going to have a stock block for the most part. I AM going to use block guard though along with normal studs and head gasket. But besides that I'm not going to do anything with the block.

But back to the build. I planned on building a cage today but I had to go in to work this morning which I wasn't planning on and then right as I get off of work it starts to rain. And keep raining for hours.... So I guess I'll have to do the cage some other time. Maybe tomorrow if I can finish the Accord early.

But one good thing out of everything is while at work I ended up buying some parts from a friend of mine. I picked up an Aeromotive fuel pump and controller along with a Skunk 2 b18b =-( intake manifold along with some precision 1kcc injectors. Sadly it only has a stock fuel rail so I'll still have to find a rail, regulator, line, fittings and tank. But that's a good start lol. Here are a few pictures of everything.

I also found a brand new precision 46mm waste gate in my garage still in the box under a bunch of random parts I was throwing away. Good thing I actually looked through everything lol. It has 5 or 6 springs and all the fittings are included.

I think that's a pretty productive day considering I didn't do what I planned on doing at all.

Tomorrow priority is to finish the accord which is hard as hell when you only have one person and one jack to drop a damn f22 trans. I almost thought about just dropping the whole motor to make it easier then I remember my hoist is broken =-(

I'll have more stuff up tomorrow hopefully if I get a chance to work on the car. I really want to mount the damn battery somewhere. Any suggestions? I'm thinking behind the bumper somewhere. I'll see what I can do tomorrow.

Thanks. I'll try to keep updating this thing whenever I get a new part or do something. Funny thing is I've never done one of these before. But now that I started this one I wish I would have done it on a few other ones. So years later I could look back on it and remember the good old days lol. That would have been nice to have had for the one that got stolen lol.

I've used sk2 manifolds on probably 5 or 6 builds. They are awesome. They make great mid range power but seem to not work as well with high boost as the victor x manifolds. I plan to run 22-26psi so I'm going to try to trade for a victor x. Plus the manifold I got is for a b18b and I'm going to need a b16 one since I'm going to be going lsvtec.

So if anyone has a victor x manifold for a b16 head they wanna trade for a SK2 manifold for a b18b let me know because I'll straight trade for one.

But I'll let you know how the a1k works. I'll have to figure out how the hell to wire this thing up. I think I'm just going to buy a panel and mount it in my dash so I can turn on/off whatever I want. Plus it will make it "harder" to steal lol.

Update on the car. Nothing =-(

Good thing is I'm off tomorrow and no matter what the weather is like I'm going to weld a cage together inside and hopefully paint it. Any ideas what would look good? I normally just do black but I was thinking I might change it up a bit. The car is red all over. I'm not sure what color wheels I'm going to be putting on it but that really doesn't matter. First thing is to just get the cage in. As of right now I'm going to be doing a 6 point and a cross member for some seat belts. I'd like to keep the back open if I can but I might have to go 8-12 point depending on what kind of power this thing makes. But for now I'll just go with the 6 point. I also might be getting some random small parts tomorrow at the shop. But that's it for now.

and I think it looks good. I just wish I would have used air tools or something because after 3 hours of scrubbing my hand and forearm was destroyed but I think it looks awesome. I might end up painting it again along with the roll cage and wheels to match it up a little. But I was never the best at color coordinating lol

Today was great. Off of work and great cool fall weather. First thing I did was go to the junk yard and look for some seats for the car. I wasn't having any luck there so I was heading to the exit right as they are bringing in what looked like a clean ls integra. I followed it back and looked inside and the interior was mint. I got both front seats and rails for $65 which is insanely cheap for the condition they are in.

When I got back my buddy was waiting for me with his welding equipment and a bunch of pipe already bent which was nice. We cleaned out the interior a little bit since I've been storing stuff in there and marked where the cage was going to go. After about an hour or so it was tac welded in and everything looked straight so I did my best to finish up the welds all the way around. I did a simple 6 point cage and considering I suck at welding it seems to be in there pretty well lol. I painted the cage with 2 coats of gloss black and out in the sunlight it looked nice but I don't really like how it looks inside. I have maybe half a cup of milano red that I test on the very bottom of the cage to see how that would look and I think that would just be too much red. So I think I'll either keep it black how it is or maybe get some basic covers for it so I don't hit my head on it all the time. But for now the cage looks great and the seats also bolted straight in which was odd since they are almost always a bitch to get in. Probably because of all the elbow room in there lol.

I don't know what I did with the pictures on my old camera that showed the interior before I did anything but it was REALLY clean before I put anything in there. Luckily I can at least show you how it looks now with the cage and integra seats in...

I also grabbed the rear brakes off of the Integra while I was at the junk yard. Grinded them down and then spray painted with some high temp black paint...

And no I'm not missing one. It's on the car so I can actually use the hand brake instead of a damn block finally.

After that I went to jegs and bought some remote battery jumping terminals and a battery shut off switch. Once I got back I just took a drill to the bumper and popped them in. Looks nice it will make it easy to jump my Awesome batter when it dies which it will...

And here is what my battery tray looks like with my RACING battery...

And the finished product

I plan on getting some pistons next week from a guy I know. CP 9:1 "slightly" used. I'll see how "slightly" used they are when I go and see them. But for what he's asking it's almost stupid not to buy them.

Well that's all for today. I'll have some more stuff in the next few days. And if anyone wants to sell a type r or b16 head let me know. It needs to be in mint condition and be a complete head. I don't want to mix and match parts like I almost did on my last build. That didn't turn out too well lol.
