TOYO R1R questions and comments please
I'm looking for new tires for next years AutoX season for my 90 Si Hatch to run STX. And came across the Toyo R1R and am just wondering what peoples personal opinion were on them. I'm looking at a 225/45-15 on a 15x8 wheel. They're pretty much the only street tire in that size. And I'm not interested in the Hankook RS3. Thanks!
I'm not super concerned out wear beings that I'll only use them at events, as long as they'll last the season. I have street tires to put on for DDing.
Andy Hollis has some comments about running them in this topic.
Like you say, they and the RS-3 are the only street tires in 225/45-15. If you want to go up to R comps, there are a couple of autocross tires (Hoosier A6, Hankook Z214 soft compound).
I haven't heard that they wear out any faster than the other sticky street tires (RE-11, Star Spec, etc, none of which are available in 225/45-15).

yes, they wear fast to me. i'm running the dunlop direzza star spec's now, and they have lasted several events and some daily driving...
Any reason for not wanting RS3's? Check GRM's website as they have reviewed all these tires.
My buddy had a set of R1R's, and wore through them pretty fast.

they will last you all season if you are autoxing. there is a guy in our region who does our full season and a few with other regions. he has no problems with wear. the car is not his daily either. just autocrosses it only..no track events.
i had wear issues on my fronts pretty bad after 3 track events..2 autoxs..1 autox tnt. also on the wet issue..i have drove on track on worn and full tread r1rs. worn below half tread was pretty bad and anything beyond moderate throttle became traction problems. full treads on the other hand on track were awesome. i had no problems with traction except on this quick right left transition but it was predictable.
alot of more experienced people that have rode with me have commented on how much they like them. i chose they tires because of the 225 15in variety but alot of people i know love their star specs.

The PO installed a LSD so that automatically puts it there. But in my area I doubt I'll have issues. It should be fairly competitive.
Did he put them on stock wheels?
and also yeah like i stated that is also the reason for me going r1r.

GRM did testing and they were the fastest street tire of the bunch. They beat out the XS, which was faster than the R1R in an earlier article.

I've read through the GRM articles, and various other articles. A lot of the top ST* guys are running the R1R's and winning in them. And from what I saw of the guy I know doing reverse doughnuts in RS3's they dont bite.
There are four notable companies missing from this test. We wanted to try out the Federal 595RS-R, Hankook Ventus RS3, Nitto NT05 and the Yokohama Advan Neova AD08, but they aren’t available in our chosen size. We expect that they could be top players in this market segment, and if they twist our arms, we’ll go back for a second day of testing.
The R888 is an R compound tire. So if you can't use R comps in your class, that rules out the R888.
