Default Manual to Automatic Conversion.

I've been looking for a 96-'00 civic hatchback, but all the ones around for sale have mainly been manuals. (needing this car for my girlfriend who currently lacks the potential of a manual).

How hard is the conversion? I've already done previous engine swaps and stuff to the like in my EF already though. Was just wondering what it all involves removing/adding and the pain scale 1-10. 10 being engine swap which really wasn't hard, just time consuming.

From what I remember a friend dealing with putting a B auto into a Civic it involved LOTS of wiring. Also probably a new mount, ECU, shifter mechanism, etc. they actually swapped in the engine, got it all up and running and then figured out the auto swap later (though they had gotten it into the car). The auto swap took more work than the engine swap.

I don't think there's a lot of info out there about manual to auto either, though I haven't recently searched.

But, if you can still go the easy way, did you check this place out?

Oh, and I only searched for very near to your area. I'm personally willing to drive an hour for any car I like, farther depending on how uncommon said car might be.

Basically its like this, you either learn to drive a manual or buy an automatic to start with. If you want it done right you're going to have to replace the engine and cabin harnesses. Going the other way is pretty painless.

Its really not worth the work to try to convert it to automatic. You need a new ECU, different wiring (even under the dash the wiring is different), a different harness (for under the hood), the automatic mount, depending on the year/model u need automatic cv joints, the shifter mechanism, etc. Automatics use alot of variables to do what they do, which requires more sensors and more complex wiring. A car that came manual lacks this wiring (as it would be pointless to have it) and thats why you will have to change so much. To convert a car to manual (I did this to mine), is not very hard. Because like I said before, its much more simple.

Sounds like it the girlfriend really "lacks the potential to learn to drive stick" then you're going to have to widen your search area or talk her into a coupe or sedan (which seem to be much more plentiful as automatics in your area).

if you read the post, its for my girlfriend who doesn't give a **** about learning to drive manual. I drive manual and she doesnt seem to care for it and rather then sit through traffic like we do daily she'd rather have an automatic. But thanks for your input.
