Default 98 civic 1.6i/automatic: Idle fluctuation when cold

hey,

i have a 98 honda civic 1.6i es automatic, when i first got it it was fine but then every now and then (mainly when first starting up from cold) it makes a sound like your pushing the gas pedal down then up down then up if that makes sense. i was reversing up my drive and it was juddering and just about to stall (thats the worse it has been). recently ill be doing around 30 and i can here the sound that i mentioned earlier so im not sure whether its getting worse. it doesnt happen all the time but mainly when its cold. its terrible moving off i.e from lights etc ill put it in N and engine seems fine every now and again the revs will really drop gradually but never left it long enough to see what happens, but when i put it into D it moves off juddering along as if im pushing the gas pedal braking gas pedal braking far from smooth has anyone any idea of what could be the problem? as i said its not all the time sometimes it can be lovely moving off but alot of the time it isnt and i look like a **** lol.

Thanks in advance,

Dan.

how many miles on?
The first and the cheapest thing to do is the ATF Z1 (use Honda only) flush- I bet you it never had a drain and fill. you will have to perfom it few times every 3k for a complete change.

$6-$8 per quart...each time you do it it may take up to 2.5qt- the vehicle must be level and the car warmed up.

Let's hope nobody fed her wrong fluid before. Hondas are finicky that way.

Maverickdc, if indeed you have what's described as "jumping idle" then start addressing the problem as hatchet_honda suggests ^

Definitely start by cleaning the IACV and bleeding the cooling system.

Any CEL codes?
