Move the spring perch down to go lower.

I'm somewhat curious as to how anyone could think that raising the spring perch could possibly lower the car...

hypothetically, you can raise it so the car compresses the spring since the collar is raised it will compress and make the spring smaller..

but yea i thought to lower it. thanks though

Yes, you could preload the spring like that.

Doing so doesn't make the spring smaller, it simply starts compressing it. The final compressed length (with the car's weight on it) stays the same.

And since the spring perch is now higher, the car will sit at a higher ride height.

There is no way to move the perch up and end up with the car lower. Once you get to some absurd preload levels, the height will stop going up (shocks fully extended with car's weight on it), but it will never go down...

What would be a good ride height to have it at without sacraficing the travel of the shock?

Stock.

Anything lower reduces shock travel (in bump, as it increases droop). Only way to keep the same bump travel while lowering is to use a shock with a shorter body, in which case droop travel is reduced.

Now, as to how much bump travel you really need, that is a complicated question with no universal answer for everyone.
