Painting my car . Need tips or guidance.
I am going to paint my car soon and I was wondering if anyone had a website that explains all the steps I need to do to paint.
If any of you guys have any tips to give me I would appreciate it. Thanks , Pete.
Make sure you have a good paint gun and you have enough air to support that gun. HVLP
If you don't have a water separator & coalescer, at least get a good inline air filter for the gun.
Use base/clear.
Don't mix and match paint lines. Buy good paint. Catalyzed urethane
Make sure to adhere to the critical recoat time or the paint won't stick very well... if not.. sand
Select proper speed reducer for the temperature you will be painting in. Try to paint around 70 deg C... the paint will come out much nicer.
Be very careful with flash time -- Recoat too soon and you'll get runs and/or solvent pop.
Try to get yourself a dust free environment... because dust will stick all over your brand new paint and it will show. You can sand dust out but it's not fun at all.
If you have to paint anything plastic, spray adhesion promoter over it first. Cast plastic parts have silicone-like agents in the surface that freed them from the mold at the factory... the adhesion promoter will make the paint stick.
2-3 coats of base will usually cover. 3 coats of clear is a good idea. Don't put on any more paint than you have to -- it's wasteful and makes flexible pieces crack easier.
Start at the top of the panel and work down side to side, Overlap 50%.
Material and fan control settings depend on the gun, as does air pressure.
Hope this helps.

better get maaco...j/k...I did that because I was short on time and money...I've painted before and what dustin says is true...take your time and follow procedure...if you can find someone that knows more than you and have them watch and/or help.
and you will spend a lot of time prepping the car! wet sanding and taping and stuff takes a long time! i used to work at a body shop and it sucks......but it can come out looking great if you do a good job!!
good luck
