Well ater injection is pretty neat. i have seen it mostly on turbo cars that get a hot intake charge. It cools the air in the engincylinder and when it is compressed the 02 is burned resulting in more power. Downside is if you don't tune for the extra oxygen in the cylinder you will run lean possibly damaging your engine. I haven't heard many bad things.

It doesnt add oxygen. It resists detonation. You can get more reliability with water injection. You run a 50/50 mix with alcohol. The water uses btu's of combustion chamber heat to convert to steam. Change of state cooling like that is very efficient. The alcohol will have added octane. Water injection can enable more boost or more advanced timing. Its great insurance if nothing more.

Water injection does break down oxygen atoms. It will run the engine leaner. Not so much like nitrous, but it does release oxygen. Anyhow, depending on the application you will need to add some fuel. It also breaks up carbon deposits in the cylinder.
