I bought a 98 Civic and the owner told me it overheated and does not run anymore
i tried turning it on but it just turns but dosent start.. i was just planning on swapping it out but im wondering if it could be fixed???

 

Check for spark, fuel pump priming, mechanical timing, and cylinder compression.

 

i mean, if youre buying it with the intentions of it being a project car, then jump on it. if youre looking to throw a motor in and ride around carefree afterwards, i would find a running car and focus on keeping it healthy.

 

i got the car already its gonna be my daily i bought it knowing the motor was bad but i was wondering if it could be fixed? save me some $ or just do what i had planned witch was replacing it... my 300 dosent get good gas mileage

 

got more info from the previews owner he said he was driving it and it overheated so he added water to it and tried making it home but it wouldnt go past 50mph he still made it but he said it overheated bad that it started throwing fire from the exhaust. and after turning it off it wouldnt start nomore??? im thinking the motor is probably still good dont know?

You'll have to check and see what exactly fried when he overheated it.
It may very well be toast (aqnd probably is) and then again it may not.

By the sound of it there was most likely some detonation going on so the rings, pistons, or rod bearings might be gone. The heat could have blown the head gasket or even warped the head. Not to mention the valvetrain...

 

Once you heat an aluminum block engine they're never the same again. Its toast.
