wont shift into 5th! any clues?
whats up guys, I recently got a new Exedy stage 1 clutch kit for my eg. Installed it myself along with some friends. Apparently we did something wrong because it wont shift into 5th gear. All gears are smooth, but when moving the short shifter from 4th to 5th, all you feel is as if the shifter was hitting something and not allowing it to pop into 5th. Ive tried poping it into 5th while driving and while the car being off and end up with the same result. Previous clutch was a stage 6 puck clutch (dont think this makes a difference but Ill throw it out there)
Tranny is a P20 Y4F, Si tranny.
on another note, 2nd gear lags a bit when shifted into, and 3rd gear lags alot when shifted into. It kinda revs up high without me having to step on the gas. And my speedometer doesnt work now either. Everything was reconnected and double checked, so its not a missed clip.
Any ideas? not being able to get on the freeway blows...or knowing how fast your going... =[
thanks!

maintenance has always been done to it. For the miles its about 110k, thing is when i had my old clutch it never slipped. And now that I put on the new one it started to slip. So im not sure if its the tranny itself, I think I must have done something wrong while installing it
nope, it doesnt grind at all. And all gears when entered are smooth. Except for the laggy 2nd and 3rd gear. Once the lag goes away after about 2 to 3 secs, it pulls regularly. And the 5th gear I have no clue wtf is going on there. I just wanted to get some input before i re-do the installation
Check fluids, Synchro can be affected by a clutch that won't fully disengage, but if the clutch is ok and it's still grinding or difficult to shift, you may need new synchro rings. Just sayin. I know yours aren't grindin. You may also want to check your shift linkage. I'm not an expert but the only one on here up at 4 in the morning to help you out <3
fluids are good. When I got the new kit I took it to Jiffy Lube and got the oil injected into the tranny. The clutch is new...no grinding whatsoever...and no worries man any input is better than what i started off with. Im not a tranny person by any means.
what about the clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder can it be any of these?

no sir, all we did was unbolt the linkage and then re bolted when we were done. Nothing from that area was changed...we had my car on lifts today to try and figure out the problem but no solution to it. I really dont want to open up the tranny again unless its necessary, so Im waiting on some more input from people.
thanks!
thanks!
Try putting in genuine Honda transmission fluid, my 5th would grind before I changed my clutch and after i replaced the clutch and put Honda transmission fluid it stopped.
alright guys, I'ma head to the honda dealership to buy some MTF, ill post up later on tonight and see if it was that causing the problem.
@special brownie, if I did happen to install it incorrectly, by all gears working smoothly except for 5th, what could that be? ofcourse, eliminating the possibility of it being the tranny fluid.
thanks guys

sounds like 2 things. maybe something with VSS or TPS since speedo quit working? that or messed up the clutch install , I did my first clutch install (actually I just did the rear main seal but you have to take out the entire clutch assembly) and theres not a whole lot you can mess up... at least in my head.... I mean you used an alignment tool right? you didnt rebleed the clutch system or anything did you? (sorry I am a b series guy not sure if si tranny's are cable or hydro) ... honestly only thing you can really do is take it all apart , and take each step real slow putting it back together double triple checking everything. Thats a big waste of time if it doesnt work but then at least you know if you need a new tranny or not.
when you say second lags , what do you mean? is it lagging like not shifting from 1st to 2nd or is it slipping. because that would make more sense that you would have problems with the 1-3-5 gears because they are on the same shaft. that doesnt narrow your problem down much , but it would just make more sense.

@8VEYBEYB whats the VSS and TPS? lol but yeah the speedometer quit working as well for some reason. When I first drove the car after the clutch install the speedometer was going crazy. Up and down super fast, as if I was reving the RPM but this was happening in the speedometer. Then after turning off the car off, it simply died and is at 0. Doesnt move at all now. And yes I used an aligment tool, and its a hydro.
when second gear lags, Im in first reving up to about 3500 rpms and then I change gears and it revs up to about 2500 all on its own. Then quickly lowers itself to about 1500 rpms and then the gear pulls normally. Pretty much feels as if your clutch is going out and it begins to slip? that kinda feeling....but then again its a new clutch. =/
Your Vss is the vehicle speed sensor, its located on top of the tranny, actually screws down into the top of it. Your speedo problem is the exact thing i have goin on, its the speed senor. As far as the clutch, that sounds like it wasn't aligned up properly, i only say that cause if it was your synchros you would've noticed a problem that bad before the new clutch. Since it sounds like its slipping its gotta be the clutch u installed, make sure you had the right part number that came with the kit. If it was only not goin into gear i'd say the shift linkage is either bent or not bolted up right.
now that i think of it, 5th gear on my old clutch was a bit hard to put in compared to the other gears. Like when I would be in 4th on the freeway about to hit 5th, id hold the clutch down and pretty much shove 5th into gear. Wasnt smooth at all compared to the other gears. Could I have messed up the synchros while changing the clutch?
