Default transmission identification

I have a 94 civic with a d15b. I am looking at buying a trans from a guy he doesnt know what car it came out of but was sure it would work with my motor the tag says s40-1290712 ef7p4a i looked but couldnt find anything are there other number to look for and what do these mean thanks guys

S40 is from a 96-00 civic d-series trans. Now you just need to see if it's a B000 or A000. B000 is from a civic ex while A000 can be lx/dx or cx/hx tranny. B000 is the shortest gearing for d-series.

thanks man that really helped do the 92-95 and 96-00 trans have the same case mounts and sensors is there anything i need to be aware of when i put it in my 94 civic

Thats not entirely true, A000 means small bearing case, B000 means big bearing case. HXs also use a big bearing case but they're geared super long.

No, it bolts in exactly the same, the only real difference is '96 - '00 used stronger steel shift forks instead of aluminum.

its an A000 but for 30 bucks cant complain ill start a new thread when i take it apart and redo bearings seals and might add lsd who knows does anyone know of a rebuild kit i found seals and bearings for 130 and sincros for 80. does that sound like an ok price thanks again

You can run the OBD2 VSS, the plug is the same.

You can do either. Right now i'm running a 2000 Y8 tranny in my '94 sedan with the OBD2 VSS on it, plugs in and works fine, you can also run an OBD1 VSS in an OBD2 car.
