Default No oil reading after oil change

Hey I've only just registered on the forum and have very a basic knowledge of cars

Last night I did a routine oil and oil filter change on my ej8 D16y8. I let the old oil drain thoroughly and tightened drain plug and filter tight, but so its still not to difficult to remove. Now I poured in about 1.6 lt of new 20W-50, let the engine run for a minute then shut her off and waited 5 minutes. When I checked the oil with clean dipstick it gave me a reading about 3/4 up to the max indicator. I also checked for any oil patches or leaking and there was none.

After taking her for a short drive last night, I checked the oil again after 5 minutes of car engine shut down. Did another oil check with clean dipstick and couldn't get any reading at all. Checked for oil patches or leaking and none at all. This morning I tried on a completely cold tank and similarly cannot get any reading. So I poured in more oil about 200ml at a time and continued to check the reading and still none. So far I'm certain I've poured 2lt into the tank and no reading.

If anyone may know how to help me out with this, I'd really appreciate it.

Regards

Thomas

1.6L is only about half the oil capacity. 2L is 2/3 the oil capacity. The capacity is 3.3L after an oil and filter change.

Bad oil pan gasket? Burning oil in the cylinders? Filter not on tightly enough?

Also, I don't know viscosity too well, but 20w-50 sounds like a far reach from 5w-30.

RonJ@HT - I filled it up to 3.3 and its perfect. Thanks

Have I done damage to my engine driving it on only 1.6lt ? It was only a short drive maybe 5km

SpecialBrownie - In my service manual it says to use 20w-50. Also the old service label on my car says the used 20w-50. So I'm I'd say it's the oil I need

I hope not.

From the 96-00 Civic service manual:

My manual also says to use 3.3lt I didn't know what they meant by that

But the graph is a little different. Perhaps as we have different climate in AU ?

If the ambient temp where you live typically is 35C or lower, then going with 5W30 will help you get the best gas mileage without harming your engine.

Ok thanks I'll take it into the local Honda auto for service next time and see what they say about 5W-30
