Default competative cars in non mod or prep classes

what are some of the more competative cars in hs sts/stx and other light mod classes. Just wondering what platform to chose next. Im in a situation now where i can keep a track car so I would like something a little more competative

*edit* sorry i thought i was posting in the autocross/rr forum..can a mod move this?

If I was going to buy a specific car for autocrossing I would buy a NA MR2 (92-95?) and race the car in ES. You would need some race rubber (Hoosiers or Kumho), exhaust, and some adjustable shocks. I wouldn't take the car into another class though, you do much more than the above mentioned mods puts you in SM2.

If you saw the STS results from Nationals, the 89-91 civic Si is a VERY good car for STS.

If this wasn't a Honda forum, I would suggest a 3rd generation Camarobird. You can probably find a 305 TPI car (don't mess with a TBI) with a 5 speed for around $3K. Or maybe even a 5.0L Mustang "notchback." Parts for those cars are dirt cheap, and they might be competitive in STX if the ruling on 245 tires goes through. Of course, if I bought one, I would be ashamed to tell all my import buddies!

Since this is a Honda forum, I would go with what E.C. said. Cheap car, cheap parts, fun to tinker with ...
