underdrive pulleys??
ok well i haven't seen a thread on this option in a while, whould like to get peeps pov on this upgrade these days? what companys sell good ones? where you see the powergains? if any? what motors you like them on?
Personally i hate these things, had one on my cavalier like 6 years ago, and it sucked, had one on my old 94 hatch and it made the power dim constantly... i wouldn't recommend it. if your worried about the power gain then just cut your ac and power steering out, the car was made with
Underdrive pulleys are only good for cosmetics
They reduce the alternators ability to charge the battery
They make teh power steering pump work harder
They make teh AC compressor work much harder to pressurize the system

Are you guys talking about an aftermarket(/unorthidox) crankshaft pulley, should i run it on a d16 with no ac and no power steering. The guy that gave it to me said it would be alright with a racing clutch. But idk? how to install it because an OEM pulley has 3 lines/marks and the aftermarket one has 2. But i assume you'd put it to TDC then just retard the timing from the dizzy.
wrong
distributor effects ignition timing
crank pulley effects cam to piston timing, just like an adjustable cam gear
dont bother with an underdrive pulley unless you NEED a new crank pulley and you want more bling
just dont rev it high, they SAY their pulleys are balanced from the factory (unorthodox) but Ive seen some across threads not measuring out very well. Ive seen one on a race car simply from teh start making noise it was so unbalanced. Others, have spun them to 11k rpm and had zero problems for several years
You wanan risk it, go ahead.
For cosmetics, stock crank pulley can easily be cleaned up!

well i'm puting a new waterpump/timing belt/alt belt ect. already and I have the unorthidox cranksaft pulley and it's on a d15b block w/ a si tranny and im putting a 94 vtec head d16y8 and it has stage 2 clutch and an aftermarket fuel rail and runnin no ac/ps so i think it could take it. And it does have a race radiator for mini mi high comp.

It must have been quite troublesome to find a 1994 d16y8
Ive never heard of one. Must be one of those black market type of things.

race radiator? WTF the stock radiator for 92-00 civics works GREAT for even 400whp turbo builds
Someone is trying to sound COOL over the internet

i have one on my d15b7 but its only because the motor had a broken one when i got it. i havent really noticed any problems so far but also havent noticed any gains either so im pretty neutral on the subject.
underdrive pulleys are for track cars. I can't imagine any logical reason to get one for a driver. The only benefit I've ever known for these is they have extra timing marks on them. But not really worth all the problems they come with. You will likely burn through your alt faster, and your accessories will dim.

Boy I just love these aggressive expert opinions. The comeradery in the wording "wrong"
A crank pulley does not effect timing whatsoever, although it is marked to measure timing.
Knock off pulley brands that have come and gone over the years do not have balanced pulleys. UR is the only brand that has and always will be perfectly balanced, 0 grams right off the CNC's. You get what you pay for and some are too easily lured by a cheap price only to spend 10-20 times as much to repair the daamge caused by an inferior part.
An underdrive pulley must be designed to maintain accessory output, since none of these cheap knock-offs have an R&D nor engineering staff they never test the diameters to make sure they maintain the required voltage/cooling/power steering pressure. UR is the only one again. You get what you pay for plus a 5 year warranty to back it up.
So risk what? Buying cheap and paying severely later. Pulleys are not apples to apples which is why we continue to be here 15+ years and the other stuff comes and goes as their reputation kills them due to problems.
When every extra horespower or fraction of a horsepower counts pulleys are an easy cost effectie way to free up HP wasted by the stock boat anchor heavy pulleys.
If you don't want to use the product becasue you are afraid don't use it but don't scare others with unfounded, unsubstantiated urban myths.
Respectfully,

Shawn
