Default **Replacing brake fluid??**

hey everyone!
i was out driving really hard on highway 1 a few nights ago with some friends and on the way back my brake pedal felt really soft and was going lower then normal.....i had to pump then sometimes for them to grab well......anyways luckily i had my new rotors already(power slot) and my pads just got in today (metal masters) and i bought a gallon of dot 4 brake fluid since that is what the power slot suggested i use........i have done brakes before just not replacing all the fluid since i now only have dot 3 in my car and its really low! so i thnk i might have a leak ill have to check tomorrow....well anyways how do i replace the fluid??? do i just start bleeding until i see the new stuff come out??? how much fluid will i need?? are there any common spots to check for leaks that could be causing my pedal to be soft and a loss of fluid??? and i read its bad for the master cylinder to go dry is this true???

anything else i should know about bleading the whole system?? adn dot 4 is ok for a crx right?? on the resivoir it says dot 3 only......does this matter??

thanks a lot everyone!!!

flush the system until you see the new stuff coming out, if you can see a difference. i can't remember if you bleed the system working from the closest wheel to the master cylinder out, or if it is from the farthest wheel in. anyone?

You bought a gallon? I hope not-that's a lifetime supply. A Pint would usually be enough sometimes a quart.
Anyway, Honda says use DOT3 and I asked about it and they only sell one kind to use in every car since 1988. There is no need for DOT4 and you need to be sure it is compatible with the seals in the master cylinder and brake calipers and drum cylinders.
Next-make sure the master cylinder is OK-you are describing a failure and it may not be leaking except between the internal seals.
Last-bleed from the furthest point to the closest, starting in the rear.

are you sure it's the brake fuid issue? Last time I had this problem, I have to replace the brake master cylinder. you might want to change it if you have extra cash. I've replace about 3 of these on other peoples hatches and CRX. Our symptoms is, sometimes the pedal is at normal height when you step on it and sometimes it goes deeper. Goodluck

Hey Geoff, Sean here. I had to replace my master cylinder a lil while ago, it's pretty easy. As for the brake bleeding order it's LF, RR, RF, LR. Just get the car up on 4 jackstands, take off the wheels, and have a friend pump the brakes 3 or 4 times, hold it, you open the bleeder screw for a sec, close it, then have your friend lift off the brakes and do it again. Watch the fluid in the MC and make sure to top it off otherwise air will get in the top of the lines and you'll have to bleed it allllll out. Just bleed the first one until you see the new fluid, then do the other 3 wheels the same. Use a hose over the nipple, have it go into a container, then just flush the **** down the toilet. oh yea, and dont let it squirt in your eyes when you open the screw.....it hurts!!!! haha

yeah the dot rating is basicly a temperature rating. higher the number the higher temp it'll survive w/o expanding and or boiling (yes **** boils). bleed all the old hsit out throw new in. will have to bleed air out of lines then. will be worth it tho. i wich i had breaks. i never replace the drums
