ls vs. b16
im looking to do a swap into my rex. and im just looking for opinions on whether to go ls or b16, yes the b16 yields more hp but the ls is more even with hp and tq. i would probably just do basic bolt ons like i/h/e and maybe a set of cams. just lookin for opinions
thanks
thanks
what the ls lacks in hp it makes up for with torque. the majority of the time you are not going to be racing and therefore you should consider what will be the most fun/useful to drive everyday. when you're keeping it under 3500rpm just cruising around town the ls wins hands down. not to say it still can't be fast. 2 identical vehicles with the same everything besides one being b16 and the other ls, the ls would win. put a b16 trans on the b16 and it will perform better, but of course the same is true if the ls were running a short geared transmission as well. it's all in preference really, and where you want the power to be. neither engine will outperform the other in any appreciable amount. that leaves you with factoring in the cost, and i think we all know an ls will be way cheaper than a b16.
id just go for an ls if i was you, there cheap and easy to come by. also you wont have to bother with any vtec wiring just run obd0 with a pr4 ecu witch is also very cheap and easy to come by. and if later you want vtec you can always do an ls vtec if you want. that way you could find a good vtec head and slowly build the head while your still driving your car with just the ls in it.

This is a common *** question..
Winner: Ls.
The LS has torque in abundance by comparison to a B16 which has the torque output of a mountain bike despite high horsepower numbers. And if you want to match the HP numbers of a B16 in an LS just opt for a Vtec head and take the best of both worlds.

LoL, I know. I decided to entertain OP with a response this time.
But seriously, I believe the Buddy Club Spec III (check all motor forum) cams do really well on the B16s. A nice header, 3" intake w/ velocity stack, exhaust, fuel pump, injectors and a nice dyno tune and you'll have a really nice daily.
Whatever you decide to do, make sure to have it tuned to extract all you can.

sorry for asking what comes up a lot i just want peoples opinion or what they know fro experience. i know the b16 has higher hp stock but i just dont know if for a couple grand ill be happy with the numbers it puts up. and as haddowj said i could just get a vtec head on the side and work on that while driving with the ls. if built right im assuming an ls/vtec would be reliable?
The B16 actually puts more torque to the road. Remember torque multiplication due to the transmission - basically power determines wheel torque.
Do the numbers - multiply the gear ratios by the output torques of each engine. You'll see the B16 consistently has more wheel torque.
Remember - what feels fast and what is fast are completely different. If people think they can *feel* more torque in the LS, it's all in their heads. The butt dyno feels changes in acceleration, not really acceleration itself.

I hate people putting down the b16
I believe it's a good platform to start on..

Most people who build an LS/vtec, with a b18b2/b18c1 will use the b18b2 tranny. The b18c1/b16a trannies are too pep happy, and are short revving.
If you have a tranny that is quick to get up to 5th gear, then you burn out all of your acceleration. But if you have a tranny that can rev longer to 5th gear, you'll be using more of your engine.
Besides, displacement rules over everything else.
a D16y8 makes more torque then a B16. A ZC does as well, and a Multi-point D15, torque wise is only shy about 5-7lb ft torque in comparison to the b16..this is laughable, even with 160hp. You'd have a hard time trying to prove to someone that it's efficient and reliable to keep your motor up and above 5500 grand in order to see any appreciable pull.
Way I see it...if you're not boosting a B16...don't buy it.
I just said that it was a good platform to start on. Yes displacement is everything but he never said if he was gonna use it as a track car or dd.. I was just stating what I felt like would be a good starter engine
Normally engines to start with would be of lower price, which in this case happens to be the better motor; the b18b2
