Default Determining LSD

Without the stamp of LSD on tranny...If you peek through where the axles mount to the tranny, my mechanic pointed a small metal cylinder bar that goes accross the inside visible on both ends. Anyway, he says, with bar=non lsd, without bar=lsd...is this true? Another Q, if you turn either axle attached to a tranny and the opposite axle turns also, does it mean it has lsd?

if you have both axles out, if you're able to see all the way through to the other side, you have lsd
i ..think.. if you jack the car up (front wheels of course) put the trans in NEUTRAL, spin one tire, if the other tire spins the opposite way, you have lsd.
of the car is IN GEAR and you spin one tire , i think the tire will spin the same direction with lsd.
please correct me if i'm wrong

not sure on the tire spinning issue, although it makes sense. because the lsd locks the spider gear in a sense, in neutral one wheel should move the other. as for looking through the diff, no bar means LSD baby.

Is that true with aftermarket lsd as well.
I bought a car, and the guy said that he had lsd put in it, but hte bar is still there.
so what dose that mean.

I would think LSD is LSD, nothing else to it. So you probably got lied to.

I wasnt really lied to. The tranny was given to the person whom I bought it from and claimed it had LSD. Paid $400 but there's a crack on the housing. I drove 100 miles one way to pick em up 2 weeks ago. I took it to my mechanic yesterday and he pointed out the fact that its not LSD. I called the person I bought it from and he was as surprised as I was and offered to refund my money. Cool guy, except now I have to drive it back...I thought I'd post a thread just to confirm...Thanks fellas

As far as RWD cars I've owned, when I spun the wheel on one side of the car, the other wheel spun in the same direction indicating that it was indeed LSD. I will safely assume then that the same goes for FWD. http://groups.msn.com/ClassicMinis
