Default we need a sticky about how to search the internetz

so theres alot of people asking simple questions that could be answered by a simple 2 minute google search.

maybe we need a sticky on how to search internetz in general and use the many other resources available.

if all of us been here forever all knowing members could share a trick or two about how to find the needed info i think this would benefit many, even us since we might learn a trick or two.

im guilty of that as well sometimes, not because im lazy but because i dont know where to find the info, i havent been around honda for that long, but i ve been around the computers for a while longer and learned few searching tricks that help alot.

im gonna start by this simple search

http://www.acuraautomotiveparts.org/

http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/...artsSearch.jsp

2 great pages with tonns of info hidden in plain sight

names of the parts, where they located in the engine, comparing 2 parts if unsure while doing the hybrid builds.
or if unsure if 2 engines use same part or not. sometimes the specs are listed as well.

another one, is manufacturer's pages usually contain a reasonable amount of info about the products and how to instal them
skunk2 for example
http://www.skunk2.com/camshaft_tech.php good writeup on degreeing your cams.

and the recommended cam specs as well
http://www.skunk2.com/engine-2.php?code=CSTB

when you search google alot of times the first results are from honda tech or other honda related page.

there are many more honda/ acura related pages which i ve seen but unfortunately dont remember.
if some old timers can help me out with that.

hopefully this thread doesnt die and turn into a good refference for all of us

Google and common sense are two of the best resources when working on cars.

A Helm's manual comes in handy on our Hondas, too.

It's funny that you say to use Google search because 9 times out of 10 Google leads people here. Then they are unable to find the exact answers because there is to much useless banter and hating BS crap to read through. Not too mention everyone and their dog telling people to search this and that . If you don't want to answer the questions don't, If you see a thread title that makes you palm your face don't click on it.

Least you can do is point the people in the right direction, give them a link to the FAQ's. I know that the stickies are right there. However, rather than being a ******** and spouting off like you know it all, be courteous and help out or just don't say anything at all. May end up helping you out in the end.

I'm no saint, and I am guilty of telling people to search as well, but it's not worth it to say it over and over again with the number of new members joining. It's better just to ignore the posts or show them where to go.

well i dont think we want this to turn into team integra...
you gotta know when too much is too much
you can be in control but its different from beeing a control freak.

this is by far more helpfull page than TI even with the articles and all most of that stuff is a lil outdated and people are scared to post there because after spending an hour writing a topic it gets deleted anyway...

instead of posting" use search"

how about posting a keyword or two so they can maybe search for the right keyword this time and actually find the topic you are thinking about while typing "use search button"

google search is good since it leads directly to the keywords you typed in...

my aim was to get people to understand HOW to search better.

like when you are looking for a part that you dont even know the name of anything about.

you start in a general area where the part goes
try using google images to see similar names it goes by
or honda parts catalog etc...
ENABLE google search auto complete, because it will provide you with most popular searches and alot of times thats exactly what you looking for...

the problem is, alot of good writeups are not linked to google or they are so old that they are hidden in 10 pages of unrelated BS in google search results. so you have to know a few pages to go to directly.

1 alot of shops are catching up to speed ahd have a facebook, myspace, AIM, MSN and other chat services where you can ask questions.

2 manufacturer's webpages have an email to the customer service i have used it ALOT. and 95% of the time i get the exact CORRECT answers im looking for.
so if you have a specific question about an aftermarket part, the manufacturer is the place to go and ask the questions

3 belive it or not, the service/repair manuals do have a troubleshooting flowcharts. but many people(including me) skip them automatically.

I agree, if people actually tried searching and didnt understand something then yea go ahead and make a thread asking what you dont understand after searching and actually doing some reading.

heres another thing i just discovered
on acura automotive parts:
when you input search by part number it will give you a list of all the acura models that use that specific part number

an example:
the upgraded lost motion assemblies part # 14820-PCB-305
http://www.acuraautomotiveparts.org/...s=&view=normal

input it to part search:
http://www.acuraautomotiveparts.org/...14820-PCB-305#

shows a 92-01 integra as well as 91-99 NSX

now go to honda automotive parts and see if a honda shares same parts with acura

which it does BUT it doesnt list the models its used in just shows the part directly
and turns out to be cheaper than on acura webpage
http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/...VIN+Number+---

well that was my tip of the day
hope to see more from other members as well to keep this going
