Default nutral too loose.

i just bought a used 2003 royal blue limited edition s2000 ap1 driven only 26000 km,

i bought the s2000 as i heard it has one of the best high reving engines in the world and the shifter feel is perfect,

but to my shock after a long waiting to import my s2000 finally came form japan, (3months)
i was a little disappointed at the shifter....there is lot of play in neutral gear , not the normal springy feel ,i even changed the 2 bushing ( the cup thingy and the small ball at the end of the lever) number 7 and 8 . but still no luck, its still the same after the new parts installed , but the play is fine when its in gear from 1st to 6th, should i also change the HOUSING SET on which the shifter sits in ?? or should just go for a short shifter and will it solve the play problem?
my gears engage fine all 6 of em...the problem is when the car is in NO gear i.e neutral, the stick has lots of play from left to rite, like its not connected to any thing, i can make it move 3 inches form left to rite and it also feels loose,

now i have replaced the ,54110S2A003 SEAT, CHANGE LEVER BALL (7) and ( 54111-S2A-003 ) COVER, PIVOT.

could it be the ( 54205-S2A-003 ) HOUSING SET? OR

SPRING, SELECT RETURN (24458-PCY-000)?

coz im really confused and want to fix this problum....

i kno there should be a little bit of play... but not this much

if i move the shifter while in neutral to the left and let go it stays there rather then coming back to the middle with a springy motion...

honda says i have a bad and that "THE SPRING, SELECT RETURN (24458-PCY-000) is broken, missing, or was intentionally removed"

ill post a vid for more info....

ok seriously, does the 24458-PCY-000 007 001 SPRING, SELECT RETURN needs to be looked at??

or it might be some other problem with the shifter assembly?

I did some digging and I can't find that particular spring. Btw, these two sites are really really handy:

The Honda Parts Catalog has some high quality and zoomable images from the Honda service department - Majestic Honda (hondaautomotiveparts.com) has the same diagrams, smaller and lower quality, as well as the OEM part numbers from the Honda parts database. Teach a man to fish and all that.

Can you locate that spring assembly in the diagrams and post back details on how to navigate to it?

I heard a suggestion that perhaps someone removed the return spring intentionally - that seems more likely than a failure of the part unless it broke or became detached some how.

the spring is number 7, 24458-PCY-000 007 001 SPRING, SELECT RETURN,

IS this the spring that keeps the springy feel in the neutral position.

this is what the shifter should do with the springy feel...

I believe you are needing item number 10 in the picture below. The other spring you have in the your picture is not responsible for centering the stick in neutral. It could be that it has worn out or that it was not replaced/put back if the vehicle recently had the clutch replaced.

Here is the part number and what Honda calls it.

54117-S2A-003 SPRING, LEVER PUSH No Color

Good luck

^ i think that one is the one that makes the shifter pop up when u pop it out of reverse. and bro i would just deal with the slopyness from the looks of it to replace the spring u think is ****ed up its gona take alot of work ur gona have to crack open the tranny and all. i mean if ur gona do it all urself go for it. but if someone is doing it for u it will cost u big money.

the gearbox is at the gear specialist guy,

the the middle arm in which the shifter bottom sits in, does not come to the middle when moved to the left or rite and stays there . have to push it back to middle, he is going to open it tomorrow, but he told me its either the spring or the pin which is causing the play and loose feel...
lets hope its those and noting expansive! keeping my fringes cross
will keep u up to date, since i think im the 1st one over to have this problem, may be it help some one else to solve this type of gear issue.

he has pop'd the gearbox and there was no spring
guess u r rite some one did "FORGOT" to put the spring back, on conforming the previous owner i came to know today that he got a aftermarket final gear, which he described as short ratio or was it long ratio ...hummm (i have no idea what that is)

anyways called honda they told me the spring was out of stock!
will take 6 to 8 days , my gear guy said he can put the spring form some other gearbox, and it will be perfect , infact he guarantees it....

will keep u posted.

FD's in the diff... shouldn't have messed with the tranny. Something must have broke unless maybe they did other work or repairs on the tranny.

Anyways, some people manage to miss shifts and blow their engines with mechanical over-revs with properly functioning shifters. With 3rd and 4th just a quick flip up or down from a properly-centered "neutral" with real thin gates... I'd definitely get that fixed.
