Default burning lots of oil...wuts my problem

after 2500miles of normal driving (ie vtec several times a week), my car runs outta engine oil...my bumper is filled with black dots...i use mobil 1 5w-30 motor oil

a friend has told me my problem is the piston rings (fried) and i believe him, but i'm hoping the problem isn't a big

could someone share their thoughts?

Your friend is probably right.

Do you warm up and cool down your car at all? Or just drive it *****-out as soon as the starter does its job?

I use mobil 10w-30 and it just about always breaks down. I just took it as the oil itself breaking down.

EDIT: i'm a little over 3K miles and i've already added 2.5 quarts.

hey, you're right, i dont warm up my car or cool down
does that account for my piston rings or is that the reason i burn lots of oil? thx

problem is probably ring related. not much you can do except tear it apart and put new rings in, but that $$$ unless you can do it yourself. dont know what to tell you.

Here is what I just went through.

OIL spots on bumper.. burn 1 Quart in 20 min on track
~3 quarts in 3000 miles of normal driving.

Compression great 245-233 across (Stock motor)... leakdown less than 5%

My oil rings were bad.. not compression rings. Spark plugs looked decent, because the oil was blowing by at such high RPM.

That was exactly my situation. Good compression results, good leakdown results..oil rings done! Brand new block installed under warrantly by dealer!!

personally, I'm partial to Castrol 5w30 synthetic...little to no burning (and I'm in vtec for atleast ~30mins per day or ~50 times daily)

but I'll be switching to RedLine soon.

Most of the drivers that I have met in the past who RACE their Type R report oil burning issues. Stock motors, modified motors - doesn't matter. Just make sure you CHECK THE OIL RELIGIOUSLY and don't let it get below 1/2.

The other thing you might check - that might help is the PCV valve. This is a cheap item to replace.

Besides - oil is a consumable. Only do the rings if you absolutely have to.

I only burn about a guart every 3,000 miles then i just get it changed. I'm thinking about switching from mobile 1 to something different.
