I got a 93 eg si hatch and I just fixed the cluster lights in it ( bad dimmer switch ) Anyways Now every now and then my speedo will just go crazy , go from 40- 100mph out of no where, sometimes it even goes backwards , then it will just all of the sudden go back to the right speed. . Any ideas? Never had this issue before. Thanks
in my case the speedo circuitry took a **** on me and i had to replace the cluster to fix it. do you have cruise control by chance, and if so does it still work even when the speedo is reading incorrectly? just kinda have to find ways to narrow it down to either the cluster or the speed sensor itself.

I had the same problem. Turned out the pin in the plug for the cluster was spreading open. Check the condition of your connector. One poor connection will cause the same symptoms. I too replaced my VSS and cluster before I noticed the damaged pin. I just cut and soldered a newer, cleaner plug onto the harness.

okay guys , I tried tapping on the cluster a little harder today when it started acting up and it started working, so tapping does stop the problem for a little. . then it acts back up again
i have the same prob. on my ek. my rpm and speed dont work at all. its been like this for a while. everything else works and no engine check. could it be a cluster gone wrong?
In EKs its common for the cluster to wear out (Mine did, and all the junkyard cluster all have the speedo assembly missing from them!). But I have clusters from EGs with over 500XXXkms and they never skipped a beat. Never heard of dead cluster issues in EGs but anything is possible.
its probably not the speed sensor. I had the same problem on my 97 coupe and it turned out that the fuse for the speedo/alternator was messed up and dieing. Sometimes my speedo would work other times it wouldnt, other times it would randomly jump around (sometimes when I was even sitting still). It turned out to be a fuse. And I think that fuse blew because my alternator regulator died aswell. So I think the alternator caused the whole problem, so check your alternator, and your speedo fuse before replacing the speed sensor.
