Default b20b throwing smoke / fire out of the intake and won't run

My buddy was having issues with his b18c1. No power at all idled rough and when you hit the gas it went nowhere, we redid the head-gasket and resurfaced the head. The car was still having issues so he thought it may be the block because #1 was running correct. We put the b20b in using the same harness / alternator / tranny / ecu and a couple sensors, the timing we off so we redid the timing. After we did the the idle was fine but when you hit the throttle it bogged down really hard. The harness was kind of chopped up so we took out the harness and cleaned it up and put it back in. We attempted to fire it up and it starting but sounded like the timing was off really bad, but it wasn't, he hit the gas while starting and smoke came out of the intake and make a loud noise, he attempted it again as I was walking into my house and they said fire came out of the throttle body. Kind of sleepy right now so I might not be giving all the info so let me know if you need more info but .. any ideas before we tow it to the local import shop?
