I finally blew a head gasket in my www.24hoursoflemons.com racecar . Its a 95 civic with 200k on a D16z6 it ran 2 lemons races so 6000rpm for 14 hrs each race.
I have another D16z6 with 7 races on it never had an issue but someone put a head on that motor before I got it so that was not original head gasket but I don't know what kind they used.

So the 95 civic is a little heavier than the 88 4dr I raced before so I need a little more power and just got a greddy turbo and manifold for free from a buddy and was going to run that at low 5-7 psi just want to get 140 to the tire. so was going to run a block guard and factory steel head gasket .

I've only ran the metal ones like stock .

So what has everyone had best results with .

I get a lot of parts sponsored from NAPA auto parts I think Felpro makes there gaskets .

Original metal head gasket are good quality. But you can try buying an aftermarket high performace head gasket ( metal ) a bit thicker to lower your C.R. to be able to run more boost. ( 10-12 ps) with a good tunning ( 200-220 hp).

If you race your car you should resurface the head for a perfect fit, even when your engine had never overheat, because it have already 200K. At least check your head!

 

The head gasket you blew was the OEM? If so, it´s common for D engine with metal head gasket with 15 years or older to blow the head gasket.

 

200 HP is way too much for lemons right now.with the 110 I got at wheels I can spin in an off camber turn so I think I want to get 5-6 lbs for reliability factor.

The stock head gasket is a good quality metal one. If installed properly it will last a long, long time and hold modest boost (running 18psi daily on mine for a few years at a time).

Don't bother with a block guard for 5-6 psi, that's not enough to stress the sleeves into rocking.

 

Yes, buy a OEM head gasket, check your head and resurface if needed.

Raced 10 of these started in 07 with the second race they did and I bring the peoples curse equipment for.the destruction of the cheater/ most hated team. I have a CRX called demo. Demolition with 4' stacks out the hatch. So I am very familar.now they have an option to donate $1000 dollars so your car doesn't get crushed.
