How the !$#@ do you get axles out of the tranny?!?
So I finally got the damn hub nuts off..... now I can't figure out the axles. I was told they just pull out, but they seem to just stretch in the boots, what gives? It's an H23 and there seems to be a place on the back of the block where it's bolted to it, does that need to be removed as well?
Wedge a screw driver or pry bar between the axle joint and transmission. Should pop right out.
NEVER pull on the axle as you may damage the CV joint, if you haven't already.

^true! if not, make sure you put some grease on the splines where the axle and half shaft meet. also use some grease where the axle splines go into the hub to avoid future headaches.

I've never had any luck prying on the inner joint (alone) nor beating on it with a hammer, but...
I've had good luck doing both things at the same time! LoL!
What I do is pry on the inner joint as hard as I can (without breaking something) then hit the joint with a hammer. In other words, I pre-load it with a pry bar, and impact it with a hammer... both at the same time.
The internal ring that holds the axle(s) in place, pops right in when you're installing them. But, it's a PITA to get them to release, when you're removing the axle(s).
Really, when you think about it, it's supposed to be that way. You wouldn't want them popping loose when you're driving down the road...

I drained my tranny and took out axle + intermediate shaft (unbolt the shaft first) because the shaft was stuck to the axle. Took a lot of work to separate the two once it was out. So I'd pop the intermediate shaft out along with the axle, IMO
Just out of CRAZY curiosity.... Is there a good upgrade for the OEM int. shaft I could toss in while the motor is out? I was thinking of getting the hasport axles, but monies a little too tight at the moment

Stock is usually sufficient. I use a big flathead screwdriver to pop axles. Or you can use a chistle and carefully hammer it in to separate the two...but there's probably a risk of cracking the trans case...do at your own risk.
I was thinking of getting the vatozone axles, they have it as well... I don't really need new ones, but since there out...
yeah i didnt really either, i was thinking the same thing. my buddys like "bro napa axles are lifetime warranty you can break the **** out of them and bring em back for new ones!" so i jumped on that plan.
I get military discount and I can get shop discount too so I might be swapping those bitches while there out.... WTF is so great about the hasport axles?
ha no clue.. Ive heard about the napa axle's sucking, but I could give a ****.. Ill get new ones for freez.. If I have a 10 sec drag car ok maybe not
actually ive heard napa axles are alot better than autzone, kragen oreiley or any of those. and i believe all have that lifetime warranty. it just seems to me alot of mechanics trust napa.
99% of the time, the part numbers are the same regardless of store, so i use autozone b/c they are only 2 miles from my house. plus how can you go wrong with free axles for life?
The only problem I see, is changing them again would be a PITA. I would rather spend more, even without a warranty for something I know I won't have to mess with again for a long time. It sounds like the Napa ones are good quality regardless, so I guess no need to worry.

the big *** pry bar might be your next try, but ive never had a problem getting em out
