Convert FWD automatic to AWD
Has anyone ever converted a 2006 front wheel drive automatic Pilot to AWD? What is required? It looks like the FWD is close to being already setup for it. Can you use the same tranny?
Thanks
Thanks
Thats the hard way, just pick up some of those rubberized tank track looking things, AWD is overrated.
Joking aside, I dont have the answer but for starters, can you look under an AWD model and see if there are any electronics involved with the added section to the tranny or is it full time AWD and its all bolt on items. Also does the rear brakes have drums or discs, if anything changes from your model then a brake proportioning valve may need to be changed also.
Inspect the underside of the AWD model to see what all may be needed and does your model have the mounting surfaces to hold the add on items, for example, if the rear drive shaft has a carrier bearing, do you have the mount boss for that welded on from the factory.
I know that you are looking for the answer here but could you do some homework and report what you think needs to happen also. Good luck with this project and I hope it is all just bolt on items, are you going to buy new or get the parts from a recycled vehicle.
I may worry about gear ratio in your current tranny and the bolt on RWD portion matching, I would just get the entire upgrade to be sure from a donor.

the pilot isnt really "awd" its automatic "4wd".the rear axle is controlled by electromagnetic clutches and is gets its wheel slip info from the abs so yes there would be extensive modifications required.more than you probably want to undertake.
More or less, its some form of Traction Control it sounds like and this would require a computer change and the wiring, switches, indicator lights, etc, to go along with that.

If you don't drive offroad often or have to deal with a lot of snow, it's a dumb idea. If you really want AWD, sell yours and buy and AWD one.
I'd be willing to bet the average "AWD" CR-V spends less than a minute of it's entire life getting power to the rear wheels. Your ABS will probably do 10x more in it's lifetime than the rear diff.

I actually have had my Pilot on a lift. It definitely is setup for the AWD system. The rear hubs even have cv plugs. I guess that my question would be for someone that knew about the transmissions.
Is the FWD transmission the same as the AWD? I do know that my FWD tranny has a bolt on cap in the place that the transfer case normally bolts on. So that just leads me to beleive that it may be the same. Anyone with experience, please comment.
Thanks
