Go ahead...say it was a long time ago...
Go ahead...say it's irrelevant...
Go ahead...and giggle...

I can never get over how much bigger in diameter the rear tires were than the fronts. I wonder if they used 3 sway bars though....

It would be neat to see some footage of that thing on track running.
I wonder how it turns?
Look Scott it has one wheel off the ground...
Whats this contraption called anyway?

Six Wheeled Tyrrell.
All four fronts turn! Wicked!
Here is some footage that shows the cowlings off exposing the driver and some suspension.

Is that thing All Wheel Front Drive (AWFD), one front axle for forward power and one for cornering? Each tire is only half as hot. And super low rotational inertia, for that crazy acceleration. I would run lighter rear tires though. Those seem like a waste, dragging around doing nothing.
IIRC, this design was implemented to minimize the frontal area of the wheels to improve aero. There is a great youtube video showing onboard of this car running Monaco. It seems to have turned great.
I like the old funky style of the 80's race car especially Group B rally cars maybe this set up would reduce understeer on our FWD Honda?

Ah the infamous Tyrrell P-34. Jackie Stewart and Patrick Depailler had limited success with this car in the mid 70s. Radical design was an effort at cleaner aero package up front (look at the F1 cars at the time and see how massive the fronts were too). I remember it was a bitch to build the model of this

"OMG!!!!!!!! It just occurred to me...How do you cornerweight a P34???? Sure, you need six scale pads...but the cross weight...the criss-cross weight...my...head...a...splode..."
Scott, who figures there must be a Tyrrell forum somewhere where they've been arguing about this kind of thing for years...

That thing is fantastic, and yes, would be near impossible to corner weight. I assume they just average each front corner (two wheels each) since it wouldn't matter much if there was any tiny discrepancy since the distance between them is minimal.
Also, in that picture it looks like the road is de-cambering, which would explain the [likely momentary] lifting of the rear wheel. With twice as many front tires to pass the perfect slip angle curve, I can imagine twice as much drag due to missing the curve. This could really lurch the car and lift a rear tire.

Kristo,
I think I get what you're saying...but just to be sure why don't you tell us in your own words.
Scott, who looked straight past the P34 in the paddock shots to the 012 in the background...

Maybe I somewhat misjudged this thread as a 'funny vehicle topic'.
^featuring the 'grassmobile', made by professor Gobeline, running on grass.
From the Belgian-flemish (dutch speaking part of B... too complicated to explain here) comic 'The Adventures of Jommeke', not really known in English as 'Jeremy and Frankie', nonetheless highly popular locally.
- kristo, whose present study of German Phenomenology might have gotten him a bit confused

Ahhhh...and I've been reading about Chairman Mao who phenomenologically impacted so many conciousnesses...be careful with that stuff!
Scott, who is resistant to philosophy (or self interest) masquerading as science...not that that leaves alot to believe in...which is why I cling to my sway barz now that I have them back...

Do not confuse philosophy with ideology. Ideology can be/is philosophically inspired, but then everything is, strictly speaking.
Philosophy is rational thinking (about things that aren't science (yet)).
So if swaybars work for you, you can believe in them

Jackie Stewart retired in 73 the car did not debut until 76 and it was Jody David Scheckter and Patrick Depailler behind the wheel. It was Scheckter who won with the car at the 76 Sweedish GP while Depailler finished second. Ronnie Peterson replaced Scheckter in the car the following year.
Some where on one of my backup drives I have some close up pictures of the steering linkage and suspention, when I find them I will put them up.
indeed, DB2.
stewart never drove this car.
there was a documentary on Tyrrel a few years back on speed or discovery or something. had some pretty good explanations of why this car came to be.
also, check out here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ken_Tyrrell
Eric - who has always wondered how a successful team like Tyrrel could turn into mediocre team BAR, and then disappear...

Paul is thoroughly convinced that all of you have lost your minds and are in need of some good doctor perscribed drugs to stop the delusions of granduer.
Also as long as we are discussing the wierdness of cars let talk about this one.

Also hit the wiki and see what other cars were very peculiar.

What's to discuss? The fact that we'll likely never see such revolutionary applied creativity in wheeled ground vehicle motorsports again?
