Default Popping/Crackling noise in my speakers

First off, bare with me I'm a stereo noob.

Hi guys, I have a 91 Civic hatchie and the speakers are quite old (as well as the stereo) and I'm pretty sure they may need to be replaced. But I only have enough cash to replace one of the two.

The speakers I currently have, have a cracking/popping noise that they produce when I turn the volume up on my stereo. It usually happens when there is a lot of bass in the music; but with the volume low the speakers work fine.

The stereo is just old. Cassette player ftw.

Now the question is do I have to replace both the stereo and the speakers to get rid of the popping noise? Or can I just replace the speakers? Is there a DIY tip to get rid of the noise ?

You can probably replace the speakers and fix the popping/crackling... especially if they are factory or really old.

They aren't factory but they are old. I'd say about 9 years.

Yea probably blown or maybe the voicecoil is just shot.

If you have a spare set, or a friends, you could always hook up another speaker to confirm it will fix the problem.
