1993 EJ1 winter beater $1000
1993 Honda Civic EX
2 door
5spd Standard Trans
156,xxx miles
Interior is all intact except for radio. A/C needs recharging.
The good:
Starts, goes, turns, and stops reliably, cheaply and safely.
This car was owned by a father of 2 for his work commute from 0miles to 90k miles. His college age daughter had it for 20k miles when I bought it from her. It is obvious that this car was never abused because it is on its original motor which is punchy and peppy. No oil leaks, no oil burns, the motor it self is in good shape just as the transmission and clutch. Nothing is acting up right now and in the future, I don't foresee anything major failing (motor, trans). The motor and trans will outlast the majority of the cars other working parts.
The bad:
RUST - From 20 feet, all you really see is rear quarter rust which is non repairable. It will never affect any aspect of driving the car but it is an eye sore. It is cosmetic and there is no rust on the frame of the car, these particular cars are susceptible to rust only on the exterior body panels which is good. Some cars, like Pathfinders, are notorious for developing rust along the frame rails, which means the car will literally snap in half eventually once it rusts. Nothing like that with the Civics or any Honda passenger car.
No radio, stolen.
Cracked windshield and cracked sunroof. It is important to note that the cracks are no longer spreading, they are done. Neither of them leak and the sunroof works just as it should. The crack does not obstruct my line of site through the windshield.
Front lip likes to drag. It can be fully removed or properly reattached or neither, just for looks.
Tiny dings and dents. The hood has some good dents but opens and closes normally.
Crack in rear bumper, more cosmetic.
Transmission his slight grind when shifting to 3rd and 5th but it does not pop out or do anything else out of the ordinary.
Clutch doesn't feel brand new but doesn't slip often. Only under extreme load.
As you can see, it is a beater. Not a good candidate for restoring and not a good candidate for someone looking to get a pretty car. It does one thing well, get from A to B for a low cost. I never get below 32mpg and frequently much higher. I have done repairs as they were needed during my 40k of ownership.
Passenger side axel replaced
New pads and rotors in front and back
New starter
New distributor wires
New tires and alignment 10,000 miles ago. They have lots of life left.
I change my oil every 3 to 4k.
I don't have paperwork on these repairs since I didn't see my self ever selling. I was attached to this ugly thing and wanted it to always be my beater. I just never realized how difficult it would be to have two cars with only street parking.
Those are some powdercoated 16 inch rota's inside. I can throw those in for $1200 altogether. There is a thread on them in here. No tires.
