I have a 97 civic hatch with a complete type r 5 lug conversion. When I buy a coilover setup should I just by the one for a 97 hatch? I can get a set of tokico illumina's for a eg would it be ok if I run those because I can get them pretty cheap from a friend.

Buy them for the car, unless you have the function lca's to use a type r style shock. In this case you will need the type r rear shock.

Yes you can use a eg shock, useing a few washers on the fork in back is required but everything else bolts up perfectly.
