D16A6 to D16Y8 Mini-Me Swap Help
Hey all, was wondering if someone could give me a little advice on this... I've got a 1991 CRX with the D16A6 motor in it. When I get off work today, I will be installing a cylinder head from a D16Y8. I have done plenty of research on this swap, and it has taken me a couple months to save up and buy everything to do it right, but I was wondering if someone who has already done this could answer a few questions about timing for me.
I have a ZEX Comp Camshaft (105100) for the head, but that shouldn't be much of a difference for anything. I am using a D16Y8 timing belt, and I have cam gears for D16A6, D16Z6, and D16Y8. Which gear would be ideal for this swap? And how much do I have to advance my timing? I have read *several* different people swear *several* different, opposing things and it just leads to confusion for me. What I believe I need to do is use the D16Y8 cam gear and advance timing 4.5 degrees. Am I correct on that?
Thanks for reading, hopefully someone who has done this particular swap can give me a hand.

I've read that people use the z6 gear for this particular swap, but I am starting to get frustrated because every thread on this has different people who will tell you completely different things. I think the y8 gear sounds right, but I'd really like to be sure before getting halfway done with this and not knowing why it doesn't work!
we are doing the same swap on my friends crx he has both a6 and y8 cam gear and they both fit of both cams but he is haveing truble getting his running with the a6 ecu does he need to switch to the p28 ecu for it to run
The ECU shouldn't matter when you are trying to get the car to run. The ECU DOES matter if you are trying to get your vtec to work properly though. Chances are, it isn't running because of a timing issue, which is what I am trying to sort out now. I believe timing must be advanced 4.5 degrees. Do you remember what timing belt your friend used for his? Because there is a lot of varying tales about the correct belt for this swap.
im actually going to do the same swap in my crx this weekend lol, i heard different options on the timing belt also, so im actually going to try the z6 a6 y8 and d15b7 timing belt and see which one works better
Awesome, good luck and let me know how it goes! If you don't mind me asking, are you going to use the y8 cam gear? And do you know anything about advancing/retarding the timing? Any information you have would help me out a great deal. I'm starting this in about 45 minutes, so I'll be sure to post my results soon-ish.

if you could pm me a linkk to this thread i neet to know how it goes i have the exact same setup just not put together yet i need to know what timing belt! lol and for the timing shouldnt be to hard take out the spark plug from number 1 cylinder, then turn the belt tell its all the way up, then with the valve cover off and the arrows on the cam facing up turn it back or forward some what and see how much the valves open im not sure to what proportion they are supposed to be to the pistons
Thanks for the info... I am about to torque the head down and installing the timing belt here in a few minutes. So far, everything is good.
I've been taking pictures of the whole process, would anyone be interested in seeing a complete write up once I get the car running?

Another quick update, hopefully this one helps out anyone who is currently trying this right now... The D16Y8 Timing Belt does NOT fit. I will have to go to Auto Zone in the morning to pick up a D15B7 Timing Belt, because those are 2 teeth longer than the Y8 belt that was just too damn short to fit. Hope this information helps someone!
I believe there is more than one solution using OE parts. A writeup would be great, but more importantly when it all comes together, list out a summary of the different OE components required to make it work (cam gear, tensioner, belt) in one post. That way people searching like you did will have it in the future.
Good Luck!

Car is finished and Running successfully, i used the y8 headgasket and a y8 timing belt. i didnt change anyhthing else, i also used a6 head studs. any ?'s just ask.
I got my car running today as well, everything is back together and it is great! I don't have vtec wired up yet, but so far everything is awesome. I used the y8 cam gear and the d15b7 timing belt. I have been taking pictures of the process, and I've been working on a write-up. Once I get everything completely finished, I'll post it. Hope this helps anyone out!
so why the hell do some people get to use the y8 timing belt and some people have to use the b7 belt **** i have a z6 belt at home i dont wanna **** around and diddle daddle cuz im putting my motor completly together which means i gotta pull my old motor out and i need it running asap
hey for that heads swap, i know on the z6 you have to use 7 z6 head bolts and 1 y8 head bolt. and the torque specs are a lil dif.and the y8 and z6 cam gears are differnt the y8 has one more tooth i think.im ussing the y8 cam pully on my set up
Well, lets try to keep THIS thread on the topic of A6/Y8 mini-me's for the sake of people looking in the future. Alot of the reason there is so much confusion about what to use in the old threads is when Y8 info always ends up getting mixed with Z6 info.
Fireant has a good point. When researching this swap I found a LOT of conflicting information. I'm working on a write up that should be done by the end of today or possibly tomorrow that has plenty of detailed information and pictures, but for now I'll help anyone who is trying to get this swap started by giving a list of what you need to make it work.
The block must be a d16a6, the cylinder head must be a d16y8. You'll need the d16a6 water pump and gasket, the d15b7 timing belt, the d16y8 camshaft and cam gear, a d16a6 distributor, and a d16y8 head gasket set. You will need 7 d16z6 head bolts and 1 d16y8 head bolt. I recommend getting the set from ARP that is specifically made for this swap, that is what I did and it works great. The ARP head studs use their own torque specs and every bolt, even the different one, is the same. Use Honda's torquing order.

Yeah, I did. The only y8 parts you need for this swap are the head and the camshaft/cam gear. Everything else needs to be from the a6, minus the d15b7 timing belt.
Also, you DO NOT need to adjust timing at all. The d15b7 belt has 106 teeth, with the different deck height and the y8 cam gear this should even out very nicely. I am relatively new to this kind of thing, but I can tell that my car is running like it should be. Later today I might play with distributor timing to see what happens, but as of right now I didn't need to do anything special for this swap, besides knowing the correct belt to use was the d15b7.
