Default K&N Intake on 02 Civic Caused Hood Damage

K&N Intake Typhoon 69 series on a 1.7 EX manual.

The Box says it will fit a 2002 Honda Civic Ex 1.7 Manual tranny. I have this exact car.

Bought the intake on June 14th, 2010. Installed it immediately. Noticed that the pipe came awfully close to the hood when closed.

Drove car around the block and found minor scratching on the top side of the intake and the underside of the hood. Re-checked that the intake was coming in contact with the throttle body, which it was.

Examined top side of the hood and found NO damage. No bubbling. No dent.

After driving various distances and re-checking the intake contact on the hood, I was satisfied that there was no more rubbing because I found no more metal shavings when I wiped my finger across the pipe.

After that, I checked it occasionally, only to find that the intake was actually rubbing PAST the underside hood structure and directly onto the actual hood of the car over time and through use. I looked at the top side of the hood and found a small but noticeable bubbling outward. Took it to a body shop and got a quote. Hefty price.

Anyway, I contacted K&N about the issue, but I wanted to know if anyone else has had similar problems with intakes and 02 Civics...

Thanks

I have had the same issue, however my intake was only rubbing on the support for the hood, not the actual painted part. the problem lied in two pieces: First, the intake pipe was 3 1/2 inches, instead of matching the 2 1/2 inch intake manifold's opening, therefore forcing the pipe to take a larger corner and rub against the hood like you described. Secondly, (at least the intake i had) mine did not have a mounting bracket to hold it to the engine mounts. Untill i replaced it, i had to use zip ties to strap it extremely low and at a terrible angle under the hood, to keep it from knocking and heating the hood itself. does that help? My new intake is only 3 inches, and has a much better angle off the intake manifold.

Yes. I am thoroughly pissed about it. I guess I was more interested to see if anyone else was running a K&N and having problems with a good fit.
