hey my buddy has a 97 civic ex with a D16y5 swap in it..(the eco v-tec)
he asked me to ask you fellow members on honda-tech the pros and cons of putting a y8 head on a y5.
Any suggestions?

What transmission do you have? The auto is the CVT type and the manual 5 speed is geared for economy. Both are dogs for acceleration. The intake between the two are different. The EGR is on the Y5 motor.

 

there are not any cons to putting a y8 head on the vtec-e motor, it would be all good as far as i look at it.

but you may also tell your friend to take into consideration what gwl stated about different transmissions, if it's already a 5 speed i'd suggest getting an EX tranny for it

 

After rereading this post, someone put a Y5 motor in an EX. They could have put a complete swap with the trans. Anyway, check what kind intake does it have. Maybe it still have the EX intake.

 

Its a Y5 Motor with the Y5 intake manifold so the cruise control doesnt work. And its a EX tranny.

 

Is the egr hooked up? Also, check the ECU and find the part number. P2N in the part number is the Y5's ecu.

 

It is a straight forward install with your engine. Just need the head, new head gasket, complete intake mani, throttle body and p2p obd2a ecu. And of like any other sway there will be wiring! Make sure all the parts are from a manual tranny because they are all different of that of an auto except the head. The difference is how the idle is controlled.

Pros of this head swap is a little added performance but not very noticeable. Since it is only about 12 hp increase. The cons is reduction in MPG because you it will not have lean burn.

 

12hp is a good increase though for a 40 dollar upgrade plus whatever the y8 ecu's go for but i'm sure it's not much since everyone wants obd1 ecus

also as far as mpg reduction, it'll be very minimal, and from my experience with vehicles with matched power/weight ratios, it may not even change hardly at all....for example take a GSR integra that may get 30-35mpg if that, and compare it to a corvette that has 2.5 times the power with the same weight rating or a little more but can acheive the same mpg as something with half the engine

 

Alright so to help anyone that's ever going to do this (and to sum up what everyone else has said in one post) here's my friends situation:
He has an EX coupe that had a Y5 swap

He already has the EX wiring and the P2P EX ECU.

We are swapping the Y8 head onto it and keeping the P2P ecu since its meant for this head
(if you have an HX the P2N ecu will not be healthy for your head swap so get a P2P ecu.)

The head should just bolt right on and we are going to be using the Y8 intake manifold instead of the Y5 because it alows more air flow and just looks cooler!.
You will need to change the head gasket for sure, and maybe all the other gaskets depends on their condition.
and thats about it.

well your friend is set then, lol i may have missed the information but i didn't know the car still had all the EX stuff in it, so just swapping the head is an easy way to pick up the extra power, plus using the head and IM that matches the ecu is good too

 

This was what I meant, so it is not just the ecu! The head and complete intake manifold is what you need. Make sure you get a matching set because in 99-00 they came out with air injection unlike 96-98.

Wouldn't he get ridiculously low compression? I wanted to do this mini-me but remember I decided not to because of the bad compression I would get. I could be wrong, anyone know for sure?

 

Finished the head swap. All the vacuum hoses lined up, everything was plug and play. His cruise control even works now lol. Vtec does too

whats this about the low compression tho?

corvettes only get 30mpg when cruising at 65mph, once you start bumping the mph up the mpg goes down very quickly.

my buddy gets 32mpg in his 92 Corvette LT1 with the ZF 6spd. that's excellent considering his car is almost bone stock and runs almost as good as my built y8, plus i only get 27mpg highway max driving out of boost
